Sinner's End

Sinner's End is the notorious home of the Hanging Judges. These undead jailors maintain the terrifying edifice as a base of operation, in which they can judge, imprison and execute those they deem guilty of criminal affairs. As the Hanging Judges are loyal to nothing but their own code of conduct, the place has earned the ire of many local authorities who have felt disrespected or outright attacked by the organization. Others are immensely grateful for having somewhere to send prisoner's they cannot or will not hold themselves.   Those sentenced to internment usually stay interred until their sentence or lifespan ends. The number of succesful escapees are at most in the double digits and the Hanging Judges are keen to see anyone who has thus evaded their brand of justice to be returned to their care. Numerous defenses keeps the inmates in and outsiders out. Most obvious are the imposing walls and many locked gates, patrolled by restless spartoi. Less obvious are the gargoyles hidden among inanimate statues, the animate skeletons hiding among the displayed bones of deceased criminals and the dead soldiers patrolling the depths of the moats, waiting to drag offenders into the cold and murky waters.

Purpose / Function

The purpose of Sinner's End is threefold. First of, it serves as a main base of operation on Arnyekfold for the Hanging Judges. Secondly, it serves as one of their primary courthouses for the sentencing of criminals. And thirdly, it serves as their most well-fortified prisons to hold said criminals.

Alterations

The building has been massively expanding as the Hanging Judges have gained wealth and power. It started out as a relatively simple fortification, but over the passing of ages, the Hanging Judges have added to it. Among other things, they've improved its defenses with a great wall with a moat on either side and added extra floors both by digging into the mound the castle was original built on and by expanding on top of the original structure.

Architecture

Dark and solid stonework make up much of the structure. Buttresses and edges support a host of vicious looking statues that stare down into the yards were prisoners mill about. Nooses figure prominently into the decoration, as do the occasionally bones of former criminals, left out as a warning. It's design is grim and meant to sap all hope of escape from those interred within, to remind them that they only leave when the judges allow it.

History

The founder of the Hanging Judges, the orc lich Tabbatha, realized in 2136 AIT that they would need a place of judgement and internment in order to live up to their cause. She distrusted most established powers of Arnyekfold, concluding that the only way she could be sure to get what she wanted was by making it herself. In 2143 AIT, she had managed to purchase a piece of land that had the features she required. She and her followers then invested heavily in acquiring materials and workers, beginning a three year process before the castle was finished. In 2388 AIT, the Hanging Judges arrested the vampire Iolanthe Soloma for the murder of seven people. This lead to the rest of the Soloma Family, lead by Asa Soloma, laying siege to the castle. The Hanging Judges were victorious, but it was a hard fought battle. This convinced the leaders of the Hanging Judges to invest in improving their defenses, realising that some outsiders would be willing to bring an army to their doorstep to overturn their judgements.

Tourism

Visitors for prisoners allowed the privilege sometimes come by, occasionally staying for a while if the journey is long. Nearby authority figures interested in taking advantage of the service provided by the Hanging Judges may come and tour the place. Other than that, most people stay clear of Sinner's End.
