What is Somnium, anyway?

  Somnium is the setting for the Devourers of Souls book series which I'm currently writing. It is a dark fantasy, mid-magic world with one unique species and a rich lore. Or at least that's what I intend for it to become.   The Worldanvil website serves as the definitive guide for the novel's setting, containing a wealth of information on characters, countries, and plotlines. is a vast land, fraught with political unrest, stretching from the scorching heat of the Askriish deserts to the freezing cold of the Enduuriaard mountains.   Somnium is but one of several continents in the world named after itself, but it is the center of them all, a pivotal point upon which everything else revolves.   Its expanse is dotted with dozens of nations, hundreds of city-states, and countless villages, tribes, and settlements.   Located mainly in the northern hemisphere of the world, the continent of Somnium covers approximately seven million square miles, its southern reaches chilled by sub-arctic extremes, with blinding white ice sheets like the Eternal Frost dominating the landscape, while equatorial jungles like Cynea and tropical coasts like Etreal dominate the north.   Somnium is bordered on the west by the Azurean Sea and on the east by the Starry Deep and the Askriish Cursed Sea.   Although it was once home to kingdoms and empires, the age of monarchy is now fading as republics, federations, and scattered city-states and villages struggle to take their place in a harsh yet bountiful landscape.   Countless humans call Somnium their home, alongside the rarer soul devourers, supernatural beings who exist secretly among humanity, wielding power and influence over mortal society.   It is a land of secrets and intrigue, where unforgiving cruelty is commonplace and kindness is a rare commodity where pureblooded devourers, nigh god-like beings, plot and battle endlessly in an infinite existence dedicated solely to warfare and conquests.
