Solaris

People

The History of Solaris so far

Under a watchful and attentive sun, life flourished on the eight planets of the Sol System. Each planet developed it's own unique lifeforms, who were able to meet as they advanced to become spacefaring.   In the ancient past, many denizens of the Outer Worlds worshipped (or desperately tried to appease) the Horrors Beyond the Belt, the eldritch beings believed to be native to the Oort Cloud Cloud. Today these horrors are held off by Sentinels, guardians of the solar system.   Long before the Sentinels, the Scourge served as guardians against the horrors, but since the Solar Invasion the Scourge have turned their blades against the planets themselves.

Current Species & Cultures

As an ode to the Space Operas of yore like Star Wars and Star Trek, many of the aliens of the Solaris are inspired by the classic rubberhead aliens. I wanted the people of Solaris to be humanoid, and I also wanted pretty designs. I've taken a lot of inspiration from mythology and folklore, as well as artisan doll communities.

The Men on the Moons

Most of the planets have one or more native sapient species of their own with unique features, but the majority of Solaris' roster are human.   Humans in Solaris descend from the moons, and are sometimes known as Moonies. Humanity is still often used as an all encompassing term including other sapient humanoids.

Mercurians

Many native mercurians have buglike features, like antenna, segmented body parts and chitin.   I want the Mercurians to seem tough, and a bit more alien than the rest of the Inner World. I do want to find some neat designs that fit both the nomads who remain, and the refugees of the once-grand trading empire that rivalled Saturn.

The Fei of Venus

The most well known Venusian species is the Fei. The Fei are host to many symbiotic parasites, which they cultivate and grow as personal enhancements. Outside of Venus, Fei wear gas masks to suction away the toxic fumes they exhale.   The Fei are inspired by the infamous fey of many european folklores. They seemed the perfect fit for the strange pastel paradise I wanted Venus to be.

Martians

Martians are known to be hyperliteral, and come in all hues of green. Martians are of course inspired by the greys and little green men. They're classic aliens and I couldn't see myself going any other way for Mars. Most synthetic species also originate from Mars.

Uranians

Native Uranians are inspired by harpies, angels, ghosts and other mythological humanoids associated with winds. Some of this overlaps with the design of the Scourge, so finding a good balance there is important.

Neptunian

Neptune is known as the ocean planet, and so most of it's people are adapted to live underwater. Neptunian species are inspired by mermaids, especially more the more inventive varitions. Some are more nymphlike, like the Oceanid.

Needs & Relations

Inner World

Since the Scorching of Mercury, Mercury has become the underdog of the Sol System. Most planets support their efforts to hold the Sun back, out of personal interest if nothing else. However, some corners of the world are starting to grumble about all the refugees and costs.   Venus has generally positive relationships with all the other planets, due to their luxurious exports and friendly disposition. While few claim to really understand the Fei, business with them is, at least, pleasant.   Mars is one of the leaders of the Solar System, and technologically decades ahead of the rest. They have a ongoing dispute with Jupiter over the Asteroid belt between them.   The belt, however, claim sovereignity and would really rather answer to neither. The Asteroid Belt is an important source of rare metals and minerals.

Outer World

Relations with Jupiter are tense, with many concerned about what the next move of the Giant wil lbe.   Saturn is the economic leader of the Solar System and a powerful player.   There's a lot of mutual distrust with Uranus, known as a cold and militaristic planet. However, they are close allies with Neptune.   Neptune is distant from the other planets, both as the only oceanic planet and because of the physical distance.
