Magic

The Beginning

In the Beginning, magic was the realm of the Druids who used nature as a conduit and calling on the Deity of Life, Umera, to perform great works. The secluded nature of the Druids made sharing this knowledge with other political powers a difficult feat to make happen. Eventually it was learned that they called upon Umera for their power and other groups began to use other Deities as conduits to power for everything from healing to destruction. The earliest years of discovery in the field of magic were chaotic and lawless.

Eventually magic was divided into three ways to harness the divine power:

      1. Intense study and components used to direct the will of Deities and bend magic to a Mage's will.
      2. Druids who were blessed by Umera and draw power from life around them.
      3. Clerics who draw power from a guardian deity and channel the energy through a symbol and are blessed through devoute prayer and worship.

Experimental Thinking

While many were content to leave the understanding of magic firmly in these three methods there would always be those who saught to further knowledge and push the limits of what was known. Scholars used every tool at their disposal to attempt to create new spells and expand the capabilities of magic. This experimental period of study was highly destructive and there were a number of catastrophies, big and small, culminating in the research by The Ancient Mage Banon who discovered a fourth method of harnessing magic.

Banon was persecuted and praised in equal measure for finding a way to harness the Fae magics which hadn't been explored previously. This research resulted in the creation of Banon's Desert when Banon attempted to tap into a vast current of magical energy which he lost control over. The result was the total destruction of an entire civilization, and a weakening of The Veil between the Fae Courts and the rest of Sleyterra. The weakening of The Veil was seen as a hostile act by the Fae and the decade following the catastrophy saw heavy regulations put in place for the use of magic as well as intense fighting between the Fae Courts and the people of Sleyterra.

If there is one thing to be learned from the Experimental Era it is that Fae magic is unpredictable and unmanageable.
