Sky Engineer | Sky Mechanic
Sky Engineers and Mechanics are people who work on Skyglass engines for a living. Mechanic is the lower level; they know how things work and how to fix them. Engineers are the higher level; they are able to the aforementioned, as well as, design and implement new systems safely. Both professions are extremely rare. This is due to the highly dangerous level of work they do, as well as, the lack of availability of knowledge on the subject.
In exchange for their power and potential, Skyglass engines are particularly sensitive and very volatile. They can explode quite easily if a person doesn't (or perhaps do) know what they are doing.
Those in this profession are therefore highly valuable. People and organizations would do a lot to not just acquire, but keep them. Most of them are stay and are employed with the organizations that trained them, either Keepers of the Crystal or the Confederacy. Because of these circumstances, those in this profession being involved with pirate society are practically unheard of. Only the most cunning and strong can acquire and keep them. Those who have them tend to dominate their competitors. Engineers and mechanics have a great affect on transportation, and therefore, commerce.
Due to their value to society and rarity, they are able to gain an amazing amount of remuneration for their services. They are held in high esteem.
Both the Confederacy and the Keepers of the Crystal are possessive of their engineers and mechanics. Especially their knowledge as the two corner the market on most anything to do with Skyglass. A new Confederacy policy went into effect a few years ago regarding their engineers. Their presence is now required to be logged at each destination they stop at and what task they are accomplishing, to keep track of them. When it came into effect, the Keepers soon adopted a similar policy.
The Crew's Engineer was trained by the Keepers of the Crystal.
