Coronation Ceremony
The reign of the last Ruler of the Skies or Pirate King occurred many decades in the past. Their rule is beyond living memory. So as it concerns contemporary society, only fragmented tales and half-baked rumors remain of the last Coronation Ceremony. So, when it comes to crowning a new Ruler of the Skies, people have to make it up as they go along. What follows is the coronation of the next, Ruler of the Skies/Pirate King.
The first requirement is an informal swearing. When the various Sky Lords swear to follow the to-be-Pirate King, making the latter an actual Pirate King. These Sky Lords will form the Pirate King's Council of Captains.
Next, like those before them, the Ruler will get a tattoo of wings somewhere on their body. This ritual will be just the Ruler and the tattoo artist. The artist will listen to the Ruler's life, their achievements, successes, failures, all of it. Then create a unique tattoo incorporating symbols from it. Each tattoo is personalized for its King. This is why having wings tattoos or a specific shade of red ink among pirate society is taboo. The Captain's tattoo is large but contrastingly simple. His wings spread out to cover almost his entire back.
After it heals, the Ruler follows the First Ruler of the Skies or First Pirate King's tradition and receives offerings. They walk, whilst revealing their tattoo, to their base in their home port. Their seat of power. They stand directly outside as the Council gives gifts or a show of loyalty. The only requirement is that one has to be a King's Coat (very fancy and high quality, basically a better captain's coat). Weapons tend to be popular. This part tends to become an even more dramatic show at this point.
Then, the Ruler enters their base where their crew are waiting. The Sky Lords are only a couple steps behind them and their crews. Afterwards it goes in order of a hierarchy chosen beforehand until it becomes a free-for-all of whomever all is left.
Afterwards, a speech maybe made and then a toast given to the new King. Finally, the celebration/party kicks off in full.
When everyone is mostly recovered the next day(s), the Pirate King sails their ship out of their home port at the head of the pack (similar order to entering base).
