Ilwyni Ilongau

llwyni llongau was once a nation of 2 islands. Centuries ago both these islands were Elven territory, but this all changed due to the demon insurgion following the Fall. The closeness of the Southern island to the Kingdom of Telenholm made it an easily accessible sanctuary for the thousands of refugees from the region. The first wave of, mainly human, refugees were welcomed with compassion and open arms. Many of them were armed and immediately joined the fight to help fend off the demons from the islands, preventing them from making landfall. This army grew and before long this army was staging attacks on the demon horde on the other side of the body of water.
Aside from this active army it also had to accommodate the Telenholm refugees that took to the sea for safety. Large swathes of land were stripped of forest and the resources gathered used for the construction of tools, ships, refugee camps, towns and villages. This wooden construction still dominates the aestetic of the land of the southern island.
The demonic war lasted for fourteen long years. Many of the defending troops started to feel relatively safe on the island. A great number of them formed a family there. Either carrying them over from their former home or forging a new one from the many broken homes. Although the original Elven inhabitants of Ilwyni Ilongau weren’t keen on losing large parts of their forest to these foreigners, they much prefered this benign form of invasion over the alternative of the burning Demon hordes. They demanded however that the soldiers and families would keep the Northern island untouched, those that ventured into the northern island were met with swiftly and harshly before being sent back to the southern island.
After the war was over, many of the refugees stayed in their new homes and villages. New communities grew and flourished, the Telenholm culture mixed with the traditional Elven ways of the ancient kingdom.
Later the humans learned the Northern forests were home to the Archdruid of the Circle of the Land. Most of the Elven population is concentrated on this northern island and outsiders are only very rarely allowed to settle there. Among some of the more longer lived tribes an animosity has slowly grown against the outlanders that settled and, they feel, corrupted, their homeland.
On the Southern island, the new inhabitants felt themselves too distant from the Elves in their ways of living, and thus felt a need for their own government and society. Having no king, prince or other royal around them as most of the nobility died in the cataclysmic event now called The Fall. They decided to take a vote on who should make the high level decisions for them. They agreed on a council of three, where Humans, Gnomes and Elves each had 1 representative.
Although the elves felt they were losing power in their own country, they accepted to prevent a new war and to at least retain some say in the Southern island affairs. Every five years, these members of the council (can) change, the three races select their councilmembers in very distinct ways.
The gnomes hold an intellectual contest and send their smartest members willing to serve in the council, while the humans invented a system with voting, claiming this way the representative represents most humans. While the humans claim that this way they send their wisest member, often charisma plays quite a roll. Over the past few centuries there have even been allegations of corruption of this process. The Elven representative is hand picked by the Arch Druid of the Land, although this representative, throughout the existance of the council only three individuals were ever appointed to represent the Elves. In the waning years of the council a discussion was raised about the minority races being unrepresented by the triadic council. Halflings where not represented at all while Half-Elf individuals were prevented from casting a vote in the selection of a human representative. All this political strive culminated in the establishment of the Republic of Meinir in the year 557 after The Fall.
