Demoran
Established in the year 678 before the fall during the Pyros rebelllions.
The Kingdom of Demoran is defined by its geographic nature. A country locked in between two mountain ranges and home to the largest active volcano on the continent. It's capital city of Destorhan embraced this heritage, being built up against the slopes of Asht Vaal. While the name of the vulcano losely translates to 'The Fiercest Foe' from Draconite the common nickname of 'The Ashen Vault' is more widely used and shows its significance to the people of the city and surrounding area. The streets of Destorhan are tight, the resident houses small and spartan. Some of the higher clans, the church and the army are the rare organisations that have bigger buildings to their disposal. What really defines the skyline, though, are the myriad of factories that are spread throughout the city, seemingly at random. The smell of sulfur, black powder, charcoal and other burnt smells are impossible to aand a hell to wash out). The central square is built around a natural geyser that spits out superheated water at irregular intervals. Several of these dot the city but the central one is the biggest, creating water columns of up to twenty feet high. The walls of the city are a dull gray metal, delved from the Ashen Vault itself, only leaving small gaps in the base that allows molten rock and lava to spill out. An intricate system of canals, locks and dykes keeps the canals of lava from overflowing into the streets proper in case of an eruption. Whilst the vulcano is officially still considered active it has been well over one hundred years since it last erupted.
The climate of Demoran fits the volcanic area. Whilst the soil is very fertile the biggest industry is mining, crafting and selling the soil as fertilizer. The rolling hills in the kingdom make farming very difficult and highly specialised, nearly impossible without magical or mechanical help and thus unaffordable for independant farmers. The clans and their influential households own large swaths of land throughout the country. In the city if Destorhan the average temperature is 20 degrees higher than elsewhere, this temperature difference slowly tapers off in radius of 70 miles.
The population of Destorhan is 60% Dragonborn and almost all the Dragonborn of the country live there at some point in their lives. Other dragonborn of the country live on large estates owned by their clans, overlooking mining operations, dirt farming and the bulk crafting of weapons, armour and tools. Demoran is one of the biggest suppliers of Mythril (second only to Dormark Maurr) and the sole supplier of Obsidian, a stone as tough as forged metal but nearly as light as glass. The remaining 40% are almost all laborers, mainly humans and dwarves. Though a few are able to make a living outside of the mines (not all of it legal). The labour in the mines, factories and foundries isn't slave labour but there are very few other opportunities for non-dragonborn or clan-less that it might as well be.
Most of the Dragonborn are associated with a clan (official clanless numbers are not known and their absolute number is difficult to tell as after their loss of clan there is nobody to count them during a census). The clan itself has a standing in the hierarchy and this standing is reflected on every clan member. Clansmen are recognised by symbolism. There are several reasons a Dragonborn can lose his clan, always at the order of the clan-father, most commonly this happens after a failed bid for power of the clan. The standing of the clans is kept in the great ledger of Pelniira, the actions of all the clan members are recorded and reflected in the score of the clan until such time that they lose their standing in the clan. The highest clan in the ledger (which during the Ordo Staticio is subject to change) provides the King. The standing of the clans is checked upon death of the current Monarch, whether through old age or more unnatural causes. The High Priests of Pelniira keep the Grand Ledger and as such have great influence on succession and politics. The title of Zin Variin is bestowed upon the king and he is simultaneously head of state and head of the church.
The state religion worships Pelniira, the Bailiff, the keeper of the Ledger. Asht Vaal is commonly seen as her earthen home though the stories of her actually residing there are all very old. She used the grand ledger and her quill to keep an eye over her people. A task now bestowed upon the High Priests and the Zin Variin. Once a year a nine day fast is held, ending on the day of Pelniira with the Ordo Staticio.
A common prayer in the city of Destorhan:
Hiim do lomos, hi suleyk mii! Lotlom viim gol, hi nahkip mii! Vund do gelt jaaril mii? Lok jun sav mii Sav ursel! Gol wah yol, gelt wah lom, aar wah deykel. Vos mii tolaan!
(Loosely translated: Our power from the city of steam Fed bij the Lake of shimmering stone What can touch us with our walls of metal? Zin Variin truly protects! Earth to fire, metal to water, servants to books. So do we aspire! (Last phrase often resounded by crowd)
