An emperor or empress is the ruler of an empire, an enormous area of land often made up of former nations.   Empires are formed by bringing together territories, either through conquering them by force or through economic or diplomatic means.

Qualifications

The qualifications to being an emperor or an empress is to be suitable as a figurehead for an enormous empire. Charisma and political expertise are essential to performing well as the leader of a nation that is the size of an empire.

Career Progression

There are only a few ways to become an emperor or an empress, the most central is one being born as the child of one. The firstborn child of an emperor or empress is often selected to be the heir of the throne. Other methods to climb the ranks to become an emperor/empress is to be a highly political figure. Former generals tend to do well in internal politics and if their popularity grows enough, they might come to usurp the current emperor or empress.

Payment & Reimbursement

Emperors and empresses are paid quite well for their services. They receive an income that is greater than that of high nobles by several orders of magnitude.

Purpose

The purpose of an emperor or an empress is to lead an empire to greater heights. Conquering is many times the chosen path for leaders of empires, but a number of emperors or empresses prefer peaceful coexistence, trade and economic growth.

Emperors and empresses have a very high social status. Many times, they are even perceived as deities and worshipped as such.
