Emissaries of the Silver Lady

The Emissaries of the Silver Lady are the sacred guardians of the original valley of the moon cult: Moonfall. Since time immemorial these legendary warriors have worked to defend the Cult of the Silver Lady and its followers with their lives. Despite being few in number and rarely seen outside of Moonfall, the reputation of these warriors precedes them and the mere presence of one of them can boost Silverwood's troops' morale enough to turn the tide of seemingly desperate battles. It is all the more impressive when these warriors, champions chosen by the Moon, use their incantations.   Although each has his own specificities, the emissaries, also called warriors of the valley, follow an extremely rigorous and complete training leading them to mix physical strength and lunar magic to practice a unique close combat technique called the Crescent Wave. No one has ever really understood this martial art and its effectiveness is feared by the enemies of the valley as well as by the ranks of the regular Silverwood army.   The emissaries are an entity independent of any political power and, although they have sided with the Oracle without fail since the dawn of time, nothing would prevent them from turning against her if she became in their eyes a danger to the cult and the faithful. Therefore, the leaders of the organization, called the Ancient Magpies, have great political power within the conglomerate of the Silverwood lands. The organization being quite small in terms of membership, the hierarchy is quite simple. The recruits, also called newborns, train for 12 years to become emissaries. After several years of service or following heroic acts, emissaries become Magpies. This title gives them access to command in the field, to the training of newborns as well as to the Roaring Deers, the cavalry of the valley; a real institution whose entry is reserved for the elite and requires years of additional training. When the weight of years comes to slump the proud shoulders of these valiant fighters, many of them return to civilian life while others, chosen by the Silver Lady herself for their abilities, become Ancient Magpies, the latter being the strategists of these legendary troops.   In exchange for the sacrifice that such a profession represents, the emissaries are housed, fed, loved and paid. They have many advantages throughout Silverwood and the respect they receive opens many doors to them. Although not insane, their pay is significant and begins immediately after their training is completed. Apart from their fighting style, the emissaries look very similar because of their outfits. Both on the battlefield and in everyday life, they wear very recognizable uniforms bearing the coat of arms of their order. Much of their magical power comes from the runes inscribed on their armour and weapons by the Moonfall runesmiths, who are the only ones in the world who know how to imprison the power of the Moon in metal. Thus, their dark armour seems impenetrable, while the weapons they use, crescent-shaped blades and halberds of sorts, seem as sharp as the wind. The rest of the said powers seem to come from the runes carved into their flesh.
