The Disappearance of the Night Serpent

You haven't heard of the Night Serpent? The ship that sailed too far? They say it came back. I know people who have seen it with their own eyes.
Sometimes a strange ship can be seen at night, sailing aimlessly in the Vutara Bay. Legends say that it's the Night Serpent haunting the area.

Summary

Legends say that the feared pirate Captain Marien Swift was terrorizing the Vutara Bay area, plundering everything she found. Her ship, the Night Serpent was recognized in all ports around the coast, and spread fear among the locals. The officials had enough, and sent several battleships to hunt down Captain Swift.

After searching Vutara Bay for days, five of these ships spotted the Night Serpent, and started the pursuit. The chase led the Night Serpent deep out on the sea. Fearing the Sailor's Nightmare, the battleships didn't want to risk their fleet, and turned around. They never saw either the Night Serpent or Captain Marien Swift again.

Years later, sailors started talking about a strange ship sailing around in Vutara Bay. It was eerily similar to the Night Serpent. Over the next hundred years more of these observations were whispered about in dark corners of taverns.

Historical Basis

Historic records say that there was a Captain Marien Swift who plundered the coastal cities in Vutara Bay, with her ship the Night Serpent. Reports from official sources also talk about the pursuit of the Night Serpent out towards waters where the Sailor's Nightmare usually hunted ships. However, there is no official proof that the Night Serpent nor Captain Swift herself has been spotted after sailing out on the deep sea.

Spread

This legend is mostly told along the coast of Vutara Bay, but it is sometimes heard in taverns as far north as Lenthir. It's most known in Verraja and Sakastro, since these cities are the most important and visited cities in Vutara Bay.

In Art

The Song of Captain Swift is the most known song about this legend, and is often sung in taverns around Vutara Bay.
