Salt and Products

The salts and other minerals harvested from the Salfield salt flats provide vital fertilizers, preservatives, and other products for Chrenada and neighboring trade partners.   Many farms in Chrenada and The Wakari Coast rely upon their own livestock's production of fertilizers, working the manure from chickens, geese, pigs, and goats into their fields to enrich the soil. Farmers near the coast may supplement these with ocean salts. For those who require additional soil enrichment, the salts from Salfield are invaluable for supplementing and supporting the fields.   In addition, the harvested salts are used for table seasoning and for food preservation. Exports of these salts and fertilizers are sent not only through Chrenada and the Wakari Coast, but also to Tyrg, Damas, and even to the more limited cropland of Vandoga.   The commercial import of the single salt plain cannot be ignored, and it is one of the most important and least appreciated components of the Chrenadan economy. It is also entirely dependent upon slave labor, due to the harsh environment and remote location. When the institution of slavery and its potential modification or end is brought of up for discussion, no matter what arguments are presented, it is inevitable that Salfield will be raised as an example of the necessity of owned labor, as it is assumed few freemen would seek out such dangerous and difficult employment. Opponents of the institution, however, counter that most of the slaves going into Salfield are sentenced into slavery due to criminal activity, and criminals could continue to supply the necessary labor for the salt harvest even if industrial slavery were reduced.
