Kalen Baths
The Kalen Baths are a luxury bathhouse. Amenities include heated and cooled water piped constantly for a flowing stream, a broad selection of soaps, oils, salts, and scrubs, all available in various scents and colorings, and massage.
A few years ago there was a problem of prostitution within the private rooms of the bathhouse, but that was resolved with taxation, and now the Kalen offers only legitimate bath services to its elite clientele.
Purpose / Function
The Kalen Baths were built as a luxury bathhouse to appeal to an elite clientele. Public bathhouses are common in Chrenada, and the Kalen offers a more private experience with richer amenities -- and an ostentatious display of status to social peers. An invitation to the Kalen or another luxury bathhouse may be a step in a business negotiation, so the Kalen Baths can provide both services and rooms to impress and services and rooms to pamper.
Contents & Furnishings
The rooms at the Kalen Baths are designed for total luxury immersion. The heated bath water will itself heat the private compartment, providing a pleasant humid warmth against the coastal chill, though in winter an additional heat source may be provided. Jewel-toned furnishings emphasize opulence while providing comfort. Padded benches provide a place for casual conversation with the friends invited for a luxury experience (public bathing is common in Chrenadan culture, and an invitation to a luxury bathhouse is not uncommon in business negotiations, seen much like invitations to fine dining or to view a sporting event) or a place to receive massage.
Aeliptos are highly trained healers who use massage and related techniques to help their patients or their elite customers. The Kalen keeps some (slave and free) for the convenience of its guests.
Hazards & Traps
Generally, the only hazards found at the Kalen are the risk of growing too comfortable and losing too much time in a luxurious environment or perhaps falling asleep in the soaking bath and waking suddenly to cough out scented bath water. On rare occasions, however, there may be more intentional and deadly dangers, targeted to a particular client.
