Valgius Rosata's Journal

Valgius Rosata's journal is a hotly contested piece of literature. Though the item which is considered to be the validated original is archived in the Great Library, there are many academics who consider it to be an altered copy, or a complete hoax altogether.   The journal purports to be the personal account of one Valgius Rosata, an elven clerk of no family importance, whose vessel was caught in a storm on the final stretch of a Death Run to Byrock. The vessel was smashed against the rocky walls of the westward river branch, a waterway well known to be too dangerous to navigate and of no practical importance.   The surviving crew, including Valgius himself, found themselves lost on the waterway. Mistakenly believing to be on an eastern tributary, the survivors opted to follow the riverbank upstream in hopes of reaching the safety of T'ver.   Although completely out of his element in the wilds of the Deadlands, Valgius took fastidious notes along the course of their journey, including sketches of distinctive rock formations, observations of his fellow survivors' emotional status and analysis of the growing tensions, and complaints about the weather. The ongoing dramas between the crew members is a point brought up by those who prefer to argue that the journal is nothing but a work of fiction, as it begins to read like something of a melodrama.   However, several prominent Loremasters, including a Curator, have asserted the journal's authenticity, citing details recorded about the western branch that coincide with ancient documentation that a mere clerk like Valgius would not have had access to.    Unfortunately, Valgius himself cannot be interrogated directly regarding the journey, because the journal itself was found wrapped in waterproofed sailcloth floating in the Byrock harbor, having apparently been swept back down the western branch. The journal itself ends abruptly, but the fact that it was wrapped securely and safeguarded with basic preservation spells argues that Valgius at the very least had enough time to preserve it before meeting his unknown demise.    Most recently the journal came under fresh scrutiny and vociferous argument after being cited as an impetus for the lost Munelian expedition. Supposedly the expedition's leader, Antoventus Munelian, took inspiration from the journal to plan his attempt to reach the Hollow City. Several of the journal's sketches seem to imply the presence of ruined settlements and other such signs that there may, in fact, have been something left of the Hollow City to rediscover.    Like Valgius and the lost crew members, the Munelian expedition was never seen again after departing along the western branch of the River Tirvidae.
