Crystalborn
What are the Crystalborn?
Crystalborn are individuals who have been marked by a divine power as an agent of change. Crystalborn receive special dispensation to enact their will upon the world, albeit at a cost. This cost is one of lost protection. Where most individuals retain certain rights and protections from outside forces, crystalborn do not. They are indivudals of enhanced agency, with all the vulnerability and consequences that naturally flow from this state.
There are many theories concerning how one gains this status, and who bestows it. No god or goddess have ever admitted to sponsoring an individuals elevation. Indeed, the topic is considered to be a great taboo in many religions - not in the sense that it is bad to be crystalborn, but that the topic is not something meant for man to perceive. Crystalborn can generally expect to be treated with respect and fear by most clergy, who will then quickly forget about the experience as quickly as they can.
Mechanics and Gameplay
From the moment they come into play, all player characters are considered to be crystalborn. Chosen by some unseen greater power (that is to say, the player), fate bends around them to facilitate their missions and adventures. All crystalborn share the following traits:
- A crystalline rune, embedded in their skin somewhere on their body. This rune is unique to each player.
- A passive psychic connection to other characters owned by the same player, through which vague thoughts and impressions may travel, sharing knowledge, experiences, or powerful emotions. Once per day, a character can attempt a IQ-2 roll to intentionally draw information through this link.
- The ability to hear the summons of another player's crystalborn. They may even be able to temporarily teleport to their caller, though this is fully decided by the DM and is intended only to facilitate party compositions that might otherwise be problematic.
- The ability to recognize other crystalborn by sight.
- An instinctive understanding of their condition, its abilities, and its implications - at least within the context of the character's understanding of reality.
