Choosing of the Warrior
Nimue fights in one such ritual before joining the party, proving her prowess and showing off her abilities in the process. This is actually the first Choosing of the Warrior in which humans were actively invited.
The Choosing of the Warrior is a Nikki tradition enacted when considering emissaries for excursions that contain a possibility of conflict. The purpose of this ceremony is to prove if an individual can hold their own in even the most dangerous of scenarios.
History
Nikki, especially of the Winter variety have long been associated with isolation from the rest of the world. This gave them an air of mystique. This is partly because they only allow their best to represent themselves in the eyes of foreigners as a message signaling that they would not allow themselves to be conquered or have their culture stripped away from them.
Execution
Participants square off in a makeshift arena where two or more individuals engage in one-to-one/free-for-all combat. The last one to yield wins. An alternate challenge is an archery or spear-throwing competition where the candidates must strike the closest to the center of a target.
Components and tools
Since spears and bows are the primary weapons of the Nikkon Hamlet, most square off using them although they are not above using fists in combat rounds.
Participants
The chieftain usually acts as a referee with a cleric at their side to make sure no one gets seriously hurt. Anyone is allowed to attend.
Observance
Though mock bouts can take place at any time, official matches are only held in the eve of a quest or expedition.
