The draconic tongue is the oldest known language on Selaras. Dragons were the first sentient species to develop a spoken language, but since they had little to no contact with other developing species prior to the Golden Age, their language did not affect or shape subsequent tongues.
Only when dragons began interacting with mortals in the Golden Age did their language skills begin to have an effect on the world at large. Drawing partially from their own language and partially from human, elven, and aphyri languages, they created The Ancient Tongue, which was a common language designed to be easily learned by sentient creatures that would create common ground and open lines of communication between the disparate dominant species on the planet.
