Vulture Blight

Vulture Blight is an infection caught from the bile of a Dire Vulture when it dies.   Due virulent nature of the digestive system of the Dire Vulture, death often causes a violent reaction to the dramatic organ failure. Often times, upon death the Dire Vulture's gut flora is left inert and those chemicals begin to react with each other. This leads promptly to combustion, usually powerful enough to cause the torso to explode outward.   This explosion causes some of the organisms to become airborne. If inhaled, those organisms will begin to attack any living matter, attempting to break it down. While the immune system of most creatures will be able to fend off, or keep the organisms at bay, often the cartilage of most creatures reacts especially poorly.   Vulture Blight's symptoms usually display as flu like, with the infected person being unable to eat without difficulty, or outright nausea and vomiting. Additionally, the major joins of the infected become swollen, and mobility is lost. After the initial death of the Dire Vulture, Vulture Blight is rare communicable.

Transmission & Vectors

Airborne directly upon death, and resulting combustion of a Dire Vulture's stomach. Airborne organisms are typically inhaled.

Symptoms

Nausea, vomiting, and inflammation of joints.

Treatment

A week to ten day treatment of a base and or alkaline heavy solution, consumed before a light meal each morning.

Prognosis

Nausea, loss of appetite, eventual vomiting and difficulty eating. Alongside digestive problems, inflammation of the joints, increasing loss of mobility, joint pain, ending in total loss of cartilage around major joint areas.   If left untreated, can lead to eventual shut down of total digestive tract, but is typically unlikely.

Hosts & Carriers

Dire Vultures.

Prevention

A basic and or alkaline heavy solution can often neutralize the the acid heavy organisms.

Epidemiology

Statistically negligible.

Cultural Reception

The condition is rare, and is usually the purview of adventurers. Some of those afflicted go weeks without treatment, as finding the proper medication can be difficult when far from civilizations.   This has lead to the idiom "Did you eat a vulture?", to tease someone who has a small appetite.
