Kuroko

Living and developing, in the peace and solitude of the island nations of Van'Gende has had a particular effect on the culture and attitude of the Kuroko. The plant based people have an attitude of serenity and patience. This is due in part to the fact that the meat eating predators of the islands had little interest in the flesh of Kuroko. The main concern throughout their lives was the destruction brought on by the unpredictable wind tides. While the Kuroko people themselves could hide in the vast volcanic cave systems to avoid the hurricanes and tidal waves, their structures were easily destroyed. This becoming a part of life, Kuroko approach loss with a great deal of equanimity.   Over time, Kuroko did develop defences to the battering wind and waves. This was primarily done through a form of intentional ecologically based architecture. Protective coves were built from displacing earth, and strengthen over time by the deep rooting of particular plant life. This method of utilizing nature for buildings and housing has been a defining element of Kuroko culture. It was only since the introduction of the Yeoune people, that stone masonry began to be utilized. Most of the buildings do eschew from such practice still. Those that are made of brick are constructed with an attention and patience that result in artistic and practical marvels that rival cultures who have been using the practice for far longer.   Much of the patience that Kuroko practice are based in the belief that the life of singular individual is less than that of the collective. A Kuroko will not rush to complete an endeavour because they fear they will not live long enough to see it complete. Instead, they will go about their work with focus and pride, secure in the knowledge that should they not complete it, another will take up the cause.   Due to their location between the continents of Estrella and Altaza, Van'Gende has developed into a bustling core of trade. To the Kuroko, this development was met with their trademark equanimity. All were welcome on their lands, so long as they did not threaten to upset the balance of the ecology and life of those around them. The Kuroko have taken an interest in most of the developments of the world around them, but rarely do they become deeply invested in anything very easily. This has left them in an interesting position as neutral arbiters between parties. To that end, many of the other races recognize the political power that the Kuroko posses, and consider it fortunate that they seem uninterested in exerting that power in most cases.   To the other races, the Kuroko can often seem apathetic and peculiar at times. Their race has no recognized gender, which can cause confusion among those unfamiliar. Furthermore, they often times seem uninterested in the goings on of the world around them. This is, in point of fact, untrue. Much like the plants they come from, on the surface the Kuroko seem mundane, but beneath the surface their roots and interests run far and wide.
