Cambistra

The Cambistra are defined by their history, both for better and for worse. During the height of their power, the Court of Miracles found they had a problem. The subjects of their experiments to extend their power began to flee and rebel. Too busy to deal with these problems personally, they instead began to recruit from those not already under their service.   Much like their counterparts, the Naren, the Cambistra were altered by the Court of Miracles to serve a specific purpose. The newly christened Cambistra were infused with the essence of natural predators such as the Cleagh and Bruahinn, and inculcated with a powerful sense of discipline. These new creations became highly effective hunters and stalwart guards.   With the backing of the Court of Miracles, the Cambistra came to represent a new social class among the ancient world of Mirabelle (later Estrella). While not the of the "noble class" of the Court, the Cambistra were considered the highest station one could reach without the luck of manifesting magical powers. There were always those, especially among the droves of poor, which were easy recruits for the transformation to Cambistra. Soon enough, the dynamics of the world altered irrevocably.   Gone was the "honourable" sacrifice of those to become Naren. It was quickly replaced with the new "honourable" gift of being chosen to be Cambistra. Those to become Naren were chosen from among those willing to sell off children they couldn't feed, convicts, and many more duplicitous sources. The old world of the Ul'soron became newly stratified; the Cambistra on top, the Naren below, and the Court reigning above it all. It was not until the coming of the Naren, Qaendra Bana and her brother, the Cambistra, Quinsin Bana that this structure would be destroyed.   In the end, it was the Court's own infusion of discipline and honour within the Cambistra that lead to their joining in the rebellion. Generations of being raised on the "Honour of the Cambistra" lead many Cambistra to see beyond their own pampered life and strive for the ideals of freedom for all races. All too quickly, the fragile order of the Court came crashing down. As more and more of the atrocities of the court came to light, more and more Cambistra abandoned their station as servants of the Court. With the military strength of Cambistra turned against them, The Court fell to ruin.   In the years since then, the Cambistra have adopted a stoic, courtly, and somewhat repentant nature. As the Naren have risen to the fore of their new society, the Cambistra have taken a slight step back. As a culture, Cambistra are raised with a sense of obligation to hold to the values of their noble ideals given to them by the court. In a way, Cambistra view the holding up of those noble values as a way of remembering their past while working towards a brighter future.
