JONI-SPEC Unit
Synthetic humans designed and manufactured by Jones-Oseria Northern Institute.
In 2007, the Jones-Oseria Northern Institute funded research into a hybridization of synthetic and natural humans using 3D-printed organs and skin, neural networks and accelerated growth compounds. By 2065, they had 100 functional units, known as JONI-SPECs or JONI special units. JONI-SPECs can pass for human under most circumstances, possessing organic tissue and capable of producing their own fluids, blood cells and other physical byproducts. JONI-SPECs can eat and digest human food, produce waste products through a functioning execratory system, generate red and white blood cells which are indistinguishable from those of a natural human, and have the capability for sleep, though they do not require it. It is unknown if they dream.
JONI-SPEC reproductive capabilities are among the most sophisticated and most debated elements of their design. SPECs with testicles will produce viable sperm containing DNA which replicates the artificial DNA of the parent. SPECs with ovaries will produce viable egg cells in the same way. Both sex cells are compatible with each other and with human sex cells, both capable of producing a viable embryo.
Like most synthetics, JONI-SPECs require a digital download to install personality software. Second-generation Specs do not have this requirement and will develop personalities of their own as humans do. Many JONI-SPECs are powered not by JONI software but by self-replicating and self-teaching artificial intelligence programs referred to as sentients. Sentients prefer to use JONI-SPEC hardware when they have access to it due to the Specs' reproductive abilities.
