Norlic Rift

A large cavernous rift in the Norlic Mountains that lays between the Sherstad Forest and the Tyrian Marsh.  According to The Tale of Sherstad and Tyrain the rift was originally a great, lush prairie that a nymph and a dryad both wanted to claim for their own, and their fighting was so vicious that it tore the land in two.
In present day, the edges of Sherstad Forest come right up to the eastern wall of the Rift, with long roots hanging deep into its cavernous depths.  The marsh, too, abuts the western wall of the rift, and water cascades down the rough, rocky face.  Perhaps the roots and water meet somewhere, down in the depths of the rift, but no one can say for sure, as no one who has descended into the Rift has ever returned.

Geography

Contiguous with a mountain range to the north and south, bordered on the east by Sherstad Forest and on the west by Tyrian Marsh.  The rift runs about 8 miles north-to-south, but is impassible on either end due to sheer cliffs.  Crossing the mile wide Rift is the only way to enter Sherstad Forest from the west, or Tyrain Marsh from the east, as each runs exactly the length of the Rift, and no further.  The Rift is estimated to be at least 8 miles deep, based on the guess of an explorer that managed to travel two miles down into the Rift before returning.

Ecosystem

Much of the visible habitat within the Rift is nestled amongst the dangling roots on the east face.  Specialized burrowers, flying squirrels, birds, and insects make their home in the tangled roots, nibbling away at them. A handful of arboreal plants thrive here as well; there is one species of pitcher plant and three orchids that are unique to the Rift.
