Crystal Chimes

Enchanted by an expert artificer, a set of crystal chimes uses a series of spells to translate spoken word into written text, and written text into spoken word. When placed on a piece of paper with the opening down, the crystal chimes will record any words spoken within a 30ft sphere of it, transcribing the words onto the paper in a neat, legible hand. When placed with the opening up, the crystal chimes will read out the contents of the paper in a monotone voice.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The crystal chimes use an intricate web of spells to enable them to function, including two different variants of the farspeech spell, and eighteen versions of comprehend languages.  Although the spell matrix is fairly stable, it is unwise to allow other spells to interact with it, so the crystal chimes cannot be stored in any bag of holding or other extradimensional space.  Similarly, they cannot be cloaked or hidden by magical means, and they emit a faint glow at all times.

Significance

Custom made for the preservationist at the The Sapphire Library, the chimes have been used for almost three decades in the library.  Sonaranth often uses them to record important conversations, and of course they are available to any library patron who wishes to use them to read books within the library.  Additionally, the preservationist often takes a set with him when he goes out to record various folklore and oral traditions. Although one of the original seven chimes has since been stolen from the library, Sonaranth still allows patrons of the library to freely use four of the chimes at any time, keeping only two in reserve for library exclusive use, although she does not allow the chimes to leave the library anymore.
