Day 1 - Landing in Satisfactory | World Anvil

Day 1 - Landing

Today, I began my career as a FICSIT Corporation Pioneer! When the door of my drop-pod opened, a whole world lay before me. And it's my job to tame this world... to gather its natural resources and put them together in ways that will allow FICSIT - and hence all of mankind - to benefit greatly!

FICSIT is a great company to work for - they provide nothing but the best tools and are constantly concerned about the well-being of their employees. (At least that's what they told us in the orientation talks!) Equipped with my trusty Build Gun, resource scanner, and hand chisel, and armed with my Xeno-Zapper in case there are hostile natives on the planet, I was ready to set out. And to think... I'm only the third Pioneer to survive the re-entry process here! I should certainly have a lot of world to work with!

Of course the first order of business was to recycle my drop-pod into useful materials. FICSIT employees do not waste resources! One click of the Build Gun and my drop-pod was reduced to component materials and neatly stored away in my trans-dimensional inventory space by the nanobots. Watching those bots fly out of the gun, dematerializing the components and packing them into my trans-dimensional inventory made me proud to be a FICSIT Pioneer. And with that done, I could take in all of the natural beauty of the rocky desert landscape around me. Nearby were a few of the Beryl Nuts that I was told to look out for - one of the natural food and restorative sources available here. I gathered these, then took out my resource scanner.

There are iron deposits both east and west of where I landed... I decided to try west. Following a small stream that ran along the rocky desert floor, I was able to collect a lot of dried leaves and twigs along the way. My training told me that these would be valuable early fuel sources once I established a base of operations. All around me, high towers of stone reached to the sky, making for an unimaginably beautiful landscape. I only hope it will still look as striking when it's filled with the factories that I'm expected to get up and running.

It didn't take long to find the first iron deposits... and I was thrilled to find several very close together! I wasn't quite so thrilled to discover that each one seemed to be the preferred home of some sort of insect hive, since the insects were decidedly not happy with my disturbing them. But... that's what the Xeno-Zapper is for, so it wasn't long before I was happily chipping away at the capstones of the resource nodes with my trusty hand chisel.

After setting up my HUB using the parts recycled from my drop pod, I was able to get a few portable miners going to extract the ore. I could turn these into iron plates and rods at the workbench, and was able to use these to upgrade the HUB from its most basic level to something that will be livable.

As the HUB upgraded, I was also able to scan for and locate my first copper and limestone deposits, from which I could make wire, cable, and concrete. (More of those pesky flies around the copper ore, but at least the limestone was undefended.) It wasn't long before my HUB was fully upgraded and I was ready think about actually automation.

As my first day ended, I was able to look out at my work. I had miners continuously feeding smelters to produce both iron and copper ingots, and I was harvesting limestone continuously for concrete. The Biomass Burners were providing power, and I had a bunk to sleep in a a toilet to crap in.

All in all, a fantastic first day... I can't wait to get started tomorrow. First step will be to lay out a real power plant area and then my first real factory! It's gonna be great!

What Is Satisfactory?

Satisfactory is a recent addition to the genre of base-building, or factory-building games in which a player seeks out resources and builds machines to turn those resouces into parts which are then assembled into more and more complex parts and equipment. Unlike Factorio (the "godfather of factory games"), the player can actually build a factory... with walls, and windows, and catwalks, and signs, and decorations... in addition to constructing the essential assembly lines of production. It is a high graphics quality game, with amazing alien landscapes and beautiful renderings and animations of the machines and buildings that a player can produce.

The game is currently available as an Early Release game via Steam; anticipated official V1 release is in the summer of 2022.

The In-Game Tutorial

In this playthrough, RPGDinosaurBob opted to run through the in-game tutorial. This walks a new player through several of the basic commands and key bindings that will be used throughout the game, and it introduces the mechanics of scanning for resources, hand-crafting at the workbench, and using the HUB to unlock milestones for progression.

The tutorial takes the player through six HUB upgrade stages, and by the end of this process, the player has access to the fully configured HUB, two 20 megawatt Biomass Generators, the ability to scan for iron ore, copper ore, and limestone, and the ability to create the first, most basic automation using continuous miners, conveyor belts, smelters, and storage containers to turn raw ore into metal ingots.

Skipping the tutorial allows the player to create a fully configured HUB, scan for iron, copper, and limestone, and build miners, smelters, conveyors, and storage units immediately.

Starting Locations

There are four starting locations to choose from when beginning a new game in Satisfactory. The Grassy Plains and Rocky Desert are recommended for newer players; the Northern Forest is considered to be more challenging, and the Dune Desert the most challenging of all due to its lack of biomass resources.

This playthrough is using the Rocky Desert starting point. Eventually, though, as the game goes on, I expect to be expanding to some or all of the other regions, as the entire world is open for exploration - and some late-game resources cannot be found in the starting locations at all!
