Resonance
That most puzzling of phenomena
That incessant hum defined them - almost a beating heart, the palpitations of their inner workings, a harmony of thrumming life in an entity without organic tissue. Yet, the strangest thing occurred at their contact with humankind. Somehow, within a scarce few, there rose an identical rhythm. They, too, possessed resonance, that unifying force between the geometrids that supposedly made them special. What, then, made man and metal so alike? What was the thrumming heart within them both?Resonance is the defining characteristic of the geometrids and their base makeup, though certain other lifeforms have the capacity to be resonant as well. It is an odd phenomenon with peculiar interactions with the rest of the natural laws that govern the universe, sometimes even conflicting or outright contesting them. The mathematical equations behind it - if any exist at all - are not well understood at all by humankind in the present day.
Manifestation
Resonant objects can be both organic and inorganic, although the latter is far more common. Resonance originates from the Colossal Plane and the geometrids it spawns. When geometrids settle near other entities capable of absorbing their energy, they begin the saturate these entities with resonant energy. In inanimate objects, the saturation will increase or decrease depending on the level of exposure to a resonant energy. When exposure ceases, the resonant energy will eventually dissipate completely. In living entities, such as human beings, resonant energy saturation may cause a range of reactions.
Resonance is so called because of vibrations associated with it. Resonant energy comes in a spectrum of vibration frequencies, and each interacts with the environment, entities, and other frequencies in different ways. The spectrum scale itself is often represented as a circle or compass instead of a straight line, as the opposing frequencies on the extreme ends of the scale have a special interaction called dissonance. Dissonance can be described as an inconsistent frequency that rapidly cycles between the two extremes.
Individual frequencies are rarely 100% consistent, in fact. Most frequencies will "wobble" in a small range, though this inconsistency is based on how stable or unstable the frequency is. The stability of a frequency affects how easily a resonant object's frequency may be changed, or tuned. When two resonant entities come into range with one another, the stronger of the two can start to change the frequency of the other, typically so that both frequencies are in line with each other.
Localization
Without the influence of geometrids, resonance does not occur anywhere else naturally. Only geometrids possess resonance innately; all other entities must first have the capacity to safely saturate, and then come into contact with a geometrid. Entities may also become saturated when exposed to something else that is highly saturated.
Most inanimate objects cannot absorb resonant energy. Other Earth born animals known to be resonance-compatible are whales and bats, though other alien races exist who can exhibit resonance within some or even all of their population.
