Hell Gate

Hell Gate is an abandoned amusement park ride located in Dreamland on New York City ;s Coney Island .   The ride consisted of a boat ride through dimly lit caverns and increasingly fast rapids. The ride culminated in a whirlpool before depositing the patrons at the exit.   Springing a leak the day before the 1911 opening season, Hell Gate was repaired with tar. Early in the morning of March 27, 1911, lights inside the ride exploded and workers accidentally tipped over a bucket of pitch which then ignited. It wasn't long before the entire park was engulfed in flames.
