The City of Volk

The seat of the Fanagar Barony, the City of Volk (Formerly the village of Volk's House), was once a tiny swamp town until the Fanagar family claimed the title of Baron after the fall of the Yon Estate. From them it has become a hub of Motor Knights, trade with nearby Saalhensi clans and refuge from the neighboring and nearly destroyed DeGauss Barony where the warfront of the Retribution Crusade is waged.

Demographics

Many Half Elves, Humans, Half Orcs and Bisected Dwarves live here but it is visited by nearby Saalhensi Traders and like most places in the Shade Lands, there's one of everything.

Government

Baron Fanagar employees multiple Motor Knight orders most famously the Order of the Guiding Lance to keep the streets patrolled and respond to nearby incursions by both Imperial Crusaders and Orcish Defenders.

Defences

Loosely aligned Motor Knights, more concentrated towards affluent families, patrol walls and the outside to keep the people within safe.

Infrastructure

Raised up on limestone blocks, the underlying swamp filters out the city's waste and keeps the buildings above flood level. The underlying water flow allows for steam powered factories to produce Rev-Cycles, Mobiles and a small fleet of Windriders and the Baron's personal Airship, the Multitude.

Guilds and Factions

The Shaping Guild, the Rivermen, The Plaguebearers, the Collectors and a small guild known as the Reclaimers for archaeologists.

History

After the relocation of the Barony Capital 250 years ago, the city of Volk has seen war after war after war. There was a time where every part of the citizenry, from noble to pauper, was involved in the defense of Volk from southern invaders. When Baron Douglas took over for his father, things became more peaceful. He allowed the Collectors to heavily regulate trade within the city and the Plaguebearers to nearly monopolize medical care. Lastly, he brokered a 100 year contract with the Order of the Guiding Lance so that citizens could have lives of their own.   Unfortunately, a few of them never lost the fighting spirit. After the many fortresses were converted into the tenements they are today, gang violence became commonplace and soon after, it lead to clashes with the Guiding Lance and riots and rebellions became almost an annual occurrence.   The most recent was the 18th Street Riots that got so bad that Baron Douglas entreated the Wizard Carlyle to end it. The wizard chose to do this by collapsing an entire tenement leading to heavy casualties.

Architecture

From the lowest point on the city, you can see the single floor wearhouses of the docks and follow a road all the way up to Oldtown where gothic spires peak above the Walls.   From the highest point you can see down into the Feathers where the old gothic buildings flow down towards Legions where the buildings become blocky with few windows and an incredibly large population.
