Orenda Lyceum

The Orenda Lyceum is the premier academic institution of the Zapis Kingdom.  Primarily full of researchers and philosophers, the Lyceum also serves as the umbrella organization for the majority of Zapis's high-level magic users.
The term Orenda comes from an ancient halfling word that refers to the hidden bond that links all living things.
The official structure of the Orenda Lyceum is diametrically opposite that of the Trade Guild.  Rather than a strict, hierarchical system of leadership with well define rules and guidelines, the Lyceum is a loose organization of Zapis's scholars (arcane and mundane) who have agreed to work together to better serve the kingdom, while at the same time advancing each members individual pet projects.

Relationships with other organizations.

  • Due to their common love of knowledge, the members of Lyceum view themselves as a sister organization to The Blue Company of Basincall.
  • Most members of the Lyceum tend to hold the Trade Guild in disdain, viewing that organization as self-serving as the very least, if not outright corrupt.
  • Relationships with the Zapian nobility and military varies from scholar to scholar.  In general, the royal houses of Zapis and the military commanders are acutely aware of the benefits the kingdom has gained as a direct result of the research done by members of the Lyceum.

Structure

The Primeval Assembly

The Assembly serves as the Lyceum's ruling body.  Voted on annually by it's constituent members, the council is populated by the five individuals held in the highest regard by their fellow scholars.     All five members have equal authority, and oversee everything from the allocation of funds, to overseeing the logistics of especially large projects, to engaging with the other Zapian organizations (such as the nobility or the Trade Guild).

Assets

The Arcane Library at Geradine houses all of the research done by the Lyceum. Access isn't exclusive (information should be freely given), but there are limits.  This holds especially true for subjects considered dangerous or that might be used "selfishly" or to the detriment of others. There isn't a strict definition of who gets what, and the Curator and their staff generally act as the gatekeepers.
