Tetran Seam Blessing

Mining is a dangerous profession, and the Tetran guilds - with approximately three millennia of mining behind them - have well-established rituals for a wide range of underground tasks. Perhaps the most difficult task is the opening up of a new seam of ore - no-one knows how deep, how rich, or how stable it will be - therefore, the most important of the mining rituals is the blessing of the newly discovered seam.

Execution

Upon the finding of a new seam, all work ceases for the day to allow for celebration and - as gesture of goodwill, and in hope of future profits - the guild responsible will provide free drinks until midnight.   At the same time, preparations are made for the blessing, which takes place at noon the next day. With the rise of the importance of the Holy Sanctorum, official religious participation has now increased in the ritual, but this is very much 'bolted on' at the beginning - a Sanctor (ideally a member of the Cult of Factors) - will lead a prayer of thanksgiving before the seam, and burn a holy fire at the entrance.    Thereafter, the 'true' ritual will begin - seeking to assure three things:
  1. The stability of the digging
  2. The health of the miners
  3. The value of the seam
First, the foreman of the team who uncovered the seam will step forward, bearing a branch of young linden, carved into a stake. This is always freshly cut from the Over-City between the finding of the seam and the ritual. This is hammered into the ground right in front of where the digging will start, and coated with oil. This becomes the touchstone for all those entering, the wood symbolising the supports which will hold up the digging.   Secondly, the Hammer-Master of the Guild will take a pail of water, and sprinkle the face of the seam, followed by a pail of oil. Both of these will be used once the seam is opened, to prevent rock-lung and minimise the amount of dust the miners inhale. In earlier times, the foreman of the team who will first dig-out the seam would do this, concerned for the welfare of his men. However, this left the Hammer-Master assuring the wealth of the seam, and made the guild look concerned only with profit. Thus, it is more common now that these roles are reversed - with each showing fraternal regard for the interests of the other.   Thirdly, the foreman of the shift who will first dig-out the seam hammers four gold coins into the sides marked out as the entrance, hoping to assure the value of the seam. Finally, the Hammer-Master presents both foremen with a traditional token - the guild's stone encased in the guild's metal, stamped with the date and place the seam was uncovered.   Unlike the finding of the seam, this day is not a party, and proper work digging out the seam begins as soon as the ritual is completed.
