Monarch

Salia is governed by a dual-monarchy. The two monarchs traditionally belong to the ranks of house Cheimon and house Kalokai, the queen is a Kalokai and the king a Cheimon. The king and queen are considered equals in power and are chosen from their respective houses as heirs at an early age, children of previous monarchs are not considered eligible heirs.   The monarchs rule together with the council and the parliament. The council consists of representatives from the most powerful noble-houses of Salia, while the parliament consists of democratically chosen individuals from each province.

Qualifications

All members of the royal houses except those who are themselves children of monarchs are eligible candidates. Generally, children that are considered especially talented or skilled are chosen.

Requirements

Monarchs are only elected from the ancient noble houses Cheimon and Kalokai, one monarch from each house. The king from house Cheimon and the queen from house Kalokai.

Appointment

After the death of the previous king or queen, the appointed heir marries the remaining monarch and takes on the role of their predecessor. This is done at a wedding coronation, after accepting the wedding vows the candidate is crowned monarch. The wedding is followed by a week of celebrations, beginning with a ball and ending with a grand hunt.

Duties

It the monarchs duty to govern Salia together with the council and the parliament.

History

Salia was once multiple small kingdoms constantly warring with each other for territory. During this period of strife, king Cheimon married queen Kalokai. This alliance managed to unite the entirety of Salia. It was decided that this alliance would have to last for many generations to come in order to avoid renewed war. Since that day their houses have ruled together, and the alliance has remained unbroken.
