Mind the Burn

The Great Worldember Kickoff

Worldember: It's like Summer Camp, but bigger

Earlier this year I participated in my first ever Summercamp here on World Anvil... I wrote about Saethar'Kori, waxed poetic about Kuai’ain Palace, fleshed out The Dawn of the Fallen Star, built The Temple of a Thousand Faces, and talked about key historic figures like Deamod e'Lufaren, Aaina Viswan, Yen Tae-Hyun, and Imalda e'Yisonn.

Sadly, my health tanked and I wasn't able to finish it- or attend to my Enchanter duties (including keeping up with the final Summercamp Roundup posts). But thankfully, Worldember gives me the opportunity to jump back in for another go at it.

And boy am I excited!

What is Worldember?

Worldember is one of the most massive contests hosted by WorldAnvil. The primary challenge is to write 10,000 words by the end of the year- which gives you a shiny new profile badge and a chance to win prizes. Beyond that, there are brackets for higher word counts, and categories for winning other prizes.

The full competition page can be found right over here... There you can see the progress of the competition, check out the competition leaderboards, take a peak at our sponsors and the conditions of participation, and pretty much everything else you need to know. But in other words: It's just like Summercamp- but bigger.

A wild Janet appears!

Goals

This page itself is here to provide me with an easier way of tracking my progress as they relate to specific goals- like my insane goal of hitting 200k words.

Yes, I said 200k words. How crazy is that? I promise I haven't completely lost my mind, though; during Summercamp I was well on my way to making it happen. And with an average of 2k words per article- and 3 to 4 articles a day- I could just as easily make it happen this year (as long as I don't run out of steam, and my health can keep up this time).

I've even made it easy for everyone to track my progress right alongside me with this handy chart:

Words 10k 25k 50k 100k 150k 200k

My wordcount aim may be crazy, but overall my goals are simple: Finish Summercamp- and do a bit more in the process... But where Summercamp, for me, was focused on simply worldbuilding at large? For Worldember I'm going to be hiking up my billowy skirts and buckling down on the information I need for the Dungeons & Dragons campaign I DM- which is what this whole shindig was created for in the first place.

That means focusing on plot and player relevant information all month.

But course, even if I'm recycling Summercamp prompts, I did complete quite a few of them earlier this year. So for those that I completed, I've used new prompts in the table... Other Summercamp prompts just didn't fit in with the focus on campaign relevant information. Those got new prompts too- all lovingly provided by the community suggestions now available from our world dashboards. And since there needs to be a little fun in there, too? I've thrown in a few topics that are relevant to the campaign's plot and players, but which aren't necessary; they're just there for flavor and entertainment so I don't lose my entire mind this month. And that's it!

We're not Done Yet

The Winter Holiday season is about more than just Worldember, though... It's about sharing, community, and so much more. That's why some of us (like TJ and Ademal) are banding together to give something more to Worldember- and to the World Anvil community in general. So don't forget to check out the sidebar for some other ways to participate and spread the winter cheer!

Are you participating in Worldember this year? What are your goals? What are you most excited about? Let me know!

Everyone wants to win, but that doesn't mean competitions have to be no-fun no-frills grump fests where everyone's out purely for their own gain.

Like TJ, I encourage everyone to support World Anvil Creators. It is the season of giving, after all- and what better way to give than dropping a few dollars in someone's Ko-Fi, or buying them a gift from their Wishlist?

So we're encouraging all worldbuilders- regardless of level or skill- to add a link to their Ko-Fi pages (and / or their Patreons) via the account and profile settings here on World Anvil- then drop a link to their winter Wishlists somewhere on their world.

You never know who'll see it!

A Fun Game

You may notice that the Settlement prompt on my article table says "Build an entire city through crowdsourcing!"... What it means is that I want your help, as fellow Worldember participants, to build one of the largest cities to date: Sotep-Shiran.

Sotep-Shiran is the trade capital of the desert region of the Midlands, located in the Untamed Lands- the area of Tolara (where my campaign takes place) that hasn't been claimed by a government yet; largely unexplored and uninhabited, the Untamed Lands are dangerous. It's from that danger that Sotep-Shiran was formed- providing the necessary safety and security the people of the Midlands needed to survive in the harsh desert climate.

The city is filled with the Ileri and Enethi, two Ferenian (Human) subethnicities locked in a cultural war with one another; on one hand, you have the Ileri who worship the Goddess of the Water... On the other, the Enethi, worshipers of the Sun- all wrapped up with Ancient Egyptian and Persian influence, and under constant assault from the Khenra.

This is my baby... My Worldember showstopper... I want it to be big, and glorious, and beautiful, and wordy as hell- and that's where y'all come in; you get to decide exactly how Sotep-Shiran turns out- from infrastructure, to buildings, shop names, and everything in between.

So leave your ideas over in the comments section of Sotep-Shiran's article, tweet at me on Twitter @yeshummingbird, or hit me up in the World Anvil community Discord Server @LittleLilacFox#1500- and watch Sotep-Shiran develop before your very eyes, influenced by users from our own community!

Worldember - Survival Guide

Whether you're a new Anvil, or an experienced one, it's easy to lose your head when a mad dash competition like this is announced. But don't worry, Forge Mother Mistress Hummingbird (that's me) has got a few tips for you to help you beat the blues, stay in shape, and make it to the finish line- hopefully with your brain still in tact.

Focus fire: Worldember's about word count first and foremost; the important part isn't how well you write it, but that you get it written in the first place. So write first ... Edit, format, and pad your articles later!

Set Goals: Set a single realistic goal and go from there ... Set new goals as you reach old ones!

Take care: Don't forget to hydrate, eat your veggies, and get enough sleep ... Definitely don't forget to stretch your legs every 20 minutes, either- and do your basic hand, neck, shoulder, and wrist exercises. You'll thank me for it later!

Mind the Burn: Remember that Worldember's a marathon, not a sprint. Take breaks- and lots of them!

Don't deflate: With competitions like Worldember and Summercamp comes a massive influx of articles- some of which are really good. It's easy to get lost in the feelings of inferiority. Don't let it win! Regardless of skill level, world setting, or any other factor, we're just happy to have you here with us. So chin up, love- and go klick some worldbuilding ass!

Check out what I've written for Worldember so far!

Lovely article. Well formatted; a smooth and pleasant read on mobile. For those of us who couldn't participate or complete SummerCamp, the prompts were a welcome inspiration. I love the idea of a city built by the WA community and look forward to it's completion. But most of all, I enjoyed that it was written foremost with the true spirit and warmth of WorldEmber at heart. Then again you always were an amazing Enchantress. Well done and best of luck, Hum!

Aww, thank you hun! <3 You're a pretty amazing Enchantress yourself, though. I'm glad you find the prompts helpful, too!
