Di'kae Milona

A Cold and Isolated Wasteland

Saleh'Alire » Continents Tolara Kingdoms

Called Di'kae Milona in the native language of the Caenala'Vian Elves, and Milona in Overcommon, this cold and isolationist kingdom exists in the far northern reaches of the Tolaran continent; founded by Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Nhiliara e'ta Za'vaed on 16 Marca 6425, it has quickly become the pinnacle of achievement for the Caenala'Vi- something which was largely made possible only by their invention (or rather discovery, according to their lore), production, and incredibly limited export of Milonan Silk.

Geography, Weather, & Crops

It can be (and has been) said that Milona is an unforgiving realm. Sadly, such statements are not untruthful; their severe Cold Season leaves very little left alive when the Rainy Season returns- and the Rainy Season sees many regions prone to severe flooding.

This severity is seen best on the Island off the eastern Onmeic Coast- which consists entirely of the Bramala Icelands; considered too hostile, few bother venturing into this region. As a result, it remains largely unexplored. By contrast, the northernmost portions of the mainland are rimmed with steep, mineral rich mountains known as the Athdran-Lachill Range; while there's very little arable land in this region, those who live there find that it's a good place for cold loving livestock such as the Oelot.   Despite being well known for its cold, however, mild temperatures during the Dry Season leave plenty of time for planting and harvesting; the bulk of what little arable land exists lies in the southern regions- first with rice in the Zunabar Floodplains- a region that floods yearly as the ice and snow melts during the Rainy Season- and second in the southwestern area where the Greater Phorian Plains extend northwards into Milona. This region in particular produces the bulk of the kingdom's agricultural goods, and (to a lesser extent) some of its more common domesticated livestock crops.

▼ Mithral ▼
The northern Mountains of Milona are rich in resources and minerals. Most valued among those they provide the Kingdom is Mithral- a light and flexible but incredibly durable metal commonly used to make Weapons and Armor.

▼ Gemstones ▼
Alongside Mithral, the Athdran-Lachill Mountains are teaming with precious and semi-precious stones of all sorts. By far the biggest exports among them are Corundum stones like Sapphire and Ruby. Moonstone and Opal can also be found within the Mountains, but these gems are reserved for the Imperial Crown.

▼ Colored Silks ▼
It's Icy environment, plentiful mountain springs, and severe Cold Season makes Milona an optimal region for fine Silks. When combined with unique plant life specific only to the Bramala Icelands and Zunabar Floodplains, Milonan Silks are not only striking and unique in color, but also some of the most sought after in all of Tolara (and potentially the world).

▼ Plant Toxins ▼
A byproduct of Silkmaking, Milona's lesser known exports are the plentiful (and intriguing) Toxins produced from the same plants that make Milonan Silk so beautiful.

▼ Slaves ▼
If Ar'lasang Vaerda'ky is the leading exporter of Slaves in Tolara, it can be said that Milona is the leading importer; every house of worth has at least one counted among their holdings, and a family is legally considered bankrupt by the Imperial Crown without one. As a result, Slaves make up approximately 90% of Milona's imported goods- and at least 50% of their population.

Government & Nobility

A Sacerdotal-Monarchical kingdom, Di'kae Milona's government is a Matriarchal blend of Theocracy and Absolute Monarchy. At its head sits a single supreme ruler who's not only considered to be Divinely ordained by their Gods, but also acts as the High Priestess of the state's officially sanctioned faith: Anve'Reldende Elara.   Formally called The Imperial Crown, the ruler of Milona is always female and takes the title of Imperial Empress. It is incredibly rare for one to see the Imperial Empress, however; outside of her daily duties as the High Priestess of the faith, and the occasional call to act as Supreme Magistrate, the Imperial Empress makes absolutely no public appearances. Instead, she dictates her instructions as ruler only through a network of close, trusted staff who then disseminate their wishes to the populace.
▼ House Za'vaed ▼
The Imperial House; the ruler is titled as Her Imperial Majesty, The Imperial Crown of Milona and Lady of Charith- and always acts as the current High Priestess of The Four Stars.   Historical Rulers
  • Empress Nhiliara e'ta Za'vaed (6425 - 6594)
  • Empress Sabraena e'ta Za'vaed (6595 - ?)
In addition to the Imperial Crown, 5 Noble Houses were established by the first Empress of Milona, Empress Nhiliara e'ta Za'vaed (6425 - 6594).   These Noble Houses are responsible for the safety and upkeep of their regions in service to the Imperial Crown. Such responsibility includes protecting their region from invaders, collecting the Imperial Tax, enforcing Imperial Law and keeping the general peace, and so on. This is not the end of their responsibilities, however; similarly to the Imperial Crown, each of the four non-Imperial houses is associated with one of the four Gods of the faith, to whom each Matron acts as High Priestess.
▼ House Av’yani ▼
This northern House is led by Matron Taless e'ta Av’yani- the current Lady of Helvryn, and High Priestess of Eilistrae.

▼ House T'sabar ▼
This Western House is led by Matron Helasyn e'ta T'sabar- current Lady of Nirach and High Priestess of Sehanine.

▼ House Lae’taza ▼
This southern House is led by Matron Mathryna e'ta Lae’taza- the current Lady of Alyda, and High Priestess of Mesaltrun.

▼ House Do'rahel ▼
This eastern House is led by Matron Sabynda e'ta Do'rahel- the current Lady of Keteran, and High Priestess of Vandria.

While the ruler of Milona keeps themselves isolated, the same cannot be said of the rest of the Imperial House- nor the other Noble Houses. But while they are free to legally make themselves known to the populace, few actively choose to do so outside what's required of their Duties.

Military Organization

Milona's Military is relatively unstructured compared to those of other Kingdoms within Tolara. It does, however, have a military despite its lack of wide scale cohesion.   Each of the five Noble Houses of Milona commands an independent legion of its own soldiers who are tasked with the protection of that region. A sixth legion (known as the Celestial Legion) acts as the personal bodyguards of the Imperial Crown and the protectors of the Imperial City of Zebeylin. Additionally, the Imperial Crown commands a small navy of 12 ships.

An Empty Throne

The Empress's strictly enforced isolation from the populace has given rise to many rumors over the years- including rumors that Milona has no actual ruler at all. Of course, though, such rumors make little sense as Milona is a Kingdom with incredibly strict laws (and even stricter punishments for breaking them).

Notable Locations

▼ Imperial Moon Gardens ▼
Ordered built by Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Nhiliara e'ta Za'vaed, in 6522 and completed three years later in 6525; The Imperial Moon Gardens are a sprawling network of gardens occupying the center of the Imperial City of Zebeylin within the Imperial Region of Charith controlled by House Za'vaed. They feature thousands of both native and exotic plants from around Tolara- and some rumored to be from other continents entirely.

▼ College of the Five Stars ▼
Ordered built by Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Nhiliara e'ta Za'vaed, in 6591 and completed six years later in 6597. The College of the Five Stars is located in the Imperial City of Zebeylin within the Imperial Region of Charith controlled by House Za'vaed. It is dedicated solely to the study of the Arcane Arts (including its Technological applications) and is considered the most prestigious Arcane College in the currently known world.

Author's Notes

▼ Please Read Before You Comment ▼
I absolutely love getting feedback on my setting and its worldbuilding. I love it even more when people poke and prod at it, and ask questions about the things I've built within it. I want both. I actively encourage both. And it makes me incredibly giddy whenever I get either. However, there's a time and a place for critique in particular- mostly when I've actually asked for it (which usually happens in World Anvil's discord server). And when I do ask for critique, there are two major things I politely request that you do not include in your commentary:   ➤ The first is any sort of critique on the way I've chosen to organize or format something; Saleh'Alire is not a narrative world written for reader enjoyment... It's is a living campaign setting for Dungeons and Dragons. To that end, it's written and organized for my players and I, specifically for ease of use during gameplay- and our organization needs are sometimes very different than others'. They are especially diferent, often-times, from how things "should be organized" for reader enjoyment.   ➤ Secondly, is any critique about sentence phrasing and structure, word choice, and so on; unless you've specifically found a typo, or you know for a provable fact I've blatantly misued a word, or something is legitimately unclear explicitly because I've worded it too strangely? Then respectfully: Don't comment on it; as a native English speaker of the SAE dialect, language critique in particular will almost always be unwelcome unless it's absolutely necessary. This is especially true if English is not you first language to begin with. My native dialect is criticized enough as it is for being "wrong", even by fellow native English speakers ... I really don't want to deal with the additional linguistic elitism of "formal english" from Second-Language speakers (no offense intended).   That being said: If you want to ask questions, speculate, or just ramble? Go for it! I love talking about my setting and I'm always happy to answer any questions you have, or entertain any thoughts about it. Praise, of course, is always welcome too (even if it's just a casual "this is great", it still means a lot to authors)- and if you love it, please don't forget to actually show that love by liking it and sharing it around. Because I genuinely do enjoy watching people explore and interact with my setting, and ask questions about it, and I'd definitely love to hear from you... Just be respectful about it, yeah?
