Burzeden Gwaražan

Burzeden Gwarazan was an ancient king of the Zeribians. He is remembered for being a mighty explorer, who spread the Zeribian civilization to the south of the Eastern Islands.

The legend

Feren, the God of the Sea became fond of Burzeden Gwarazan's daughter, and captured her. Later sight was seen of the Great Sea Serpent, that was the manifestation of the God. Burzeden Gwarazan gathered a great fleet and started to follow it, determined to capture it and find his daughter again. He followed the Serpent south until finally the serpent reached the end of the world, and was so exhausted that it could swim no longer and died. Burzeden Gwarazan fed his people on the flesh of the Serpent, and thus his people gained almost divine strenght, and the kingdom he settled there was more powerful than any kingdom on earth during his time, and no one could challenge him. The daugher wasn't found there, but he and his daughet took good wives from the local people.

Motivation of the story

The legend tells about the most important Zeribian value, the loyalty and dedication to the family. Even though the historicity of Burzeden Gwarazan is uncertain, the legend is the explanation for the historical migration of the Zeribians to the south, and their spread to the lands of the other peoples of the islands.   Later tradition has assumed that the place the Serpent died in is Irin i heš, an island chain following the northern coast of the Southern Continent, and that the islands have formed around the sunekn bones of the beast. Huge serpent bones are still sometimes found in mines on the islands.
