Drakeland Dungeon

Purpose / Function

The ruins of a completely inescapable prison. It was built during the reign of Empress Thaumaria, and was used as a place to house dissenters to her reign. Local legend claims that the hill the dungeon fort was built on is actually the remains of an ancient sleeping dragon, and if woken from his slumber he will devour everything in sight before returning to sleep for a thousand years. Thankfully, no such activity has ever occurred, and the fort today serves as a place for tourists and local school children to take tours in what is left of the prison fortress.

Architecture

The building is an old ruinous fort sat atop an island off the coast of a minor village, on the edge of the Thaumarian Empire. The building at its conception was not intended to serve as a place for the Empress to visit, as it is significantly plainer and less decorative than any of the surviving architecture from Thaumaria's era suggests. At some point after the fall of Thaumaria, later additions to the structure suggest that the fort was used as a garrison, then as a remote Tapestrian order, and then was eventually abandoned and left to become a rune.

History

Previous histories have noted the place as being used for political prisoners and high ranking captives, but others have argued that the remote location of the prison and the remnants left behind suggest it was instead used as a place to torture and incapacitate her enemies. Debate about the true nature of Empress Thaumaria is probably misguided, as many of the prisoners held here are estimated to have been taken during a fierce campaign in which she was too involved on the front lines to continually check on her prisoners. Whatever the case, Thaumaria likely did not use the prison for large volumes of prisoners given the small capacity of space found in the original building.
