Rites of Mastery

The Rites of Mastery is a ceremony whereby members of the Amethyst Academy are honored for attaining new levels of magical mastery and are presented with Academy Rings. Each ring represents a level of arcane mastery. The most powerful mage might have nine such rings. Attaining that level of power would put them on the scale of the Sorcerer-Kings of old, who could reshape the world as they wished. Most members of the Academy have only one or two.

History

After the Amethyst Academy gained legal status, they established ranks within their guild based on mastery over the arcane. The Academy Rings are a way to show their respective magical ability and thus their rank. As the rings are only made by the Academy and can only be worn by the person they were made for, they are also a means of proving membership within the organization. Over time, the presentation of the rings became an important ritual in the traditions of the Amethyst Academy.

Execution

Amethyst Academy mages are presented with a ring for each level of magical mastery they attain. The most powerful mages have 9 rings, but most have three or less.

Components and tools

The Academy rings are custom made for the individual they are presented to.

Participants

There are two main participants in this ceremony, the mage who has attained a new level of mastery and is being honored by this ceremony, and a higher ranking member of the Amethyst Academy. The ranking member gives the mage a new Academy ring to denote their increased mastery over magic.

Observance

The first couple of rings are given out en mass during graduation ceremonies to all those who have completed their training and mastered the basics of arcane magic. Higher levels of mastery are difficult to attain, and not all members of the Amethyst Academy have the drive and talent to achieve them. As such, ceremonies for the higher levels are held whenever someone manages to gain them, not on a regular basis.
