Elves

Elves and inextricably linked to the land, and their origins are deeply entwined with those of dragons. Elves are among the rarest peoples of Iosterra, and suffered greatly during the Magister Wars and Lost Era. Like dragons, Elves share a link to the land, but unlike dragons, who rose from magic and broad biomes, they arose from specific areas within those biomes, such as the Great Baobab Grove in the Iumbu Empire. Elves are effectively immortal provided that the ecological feature they are associated to remains. If it is destroyed or severely damaged, they become mortal, infertile, and eventually perish from a wasting disease. The weapons and magics of the Magister War, and the chronological rearrangements of the Lost Era laid waste to many of their homes, and through those, them.   Elves are always unique to the feature that spawned their ancient ancestors, but have some common features. Elves are human sized or slightly taller, but have lighter builds and tend to be slimmer than that of most humans. They have little sexual dimorphism, with men and women being roughly the same in height, weight, and build. This should not be mistaken for a lack of toughness or endurance however.

Basic Information

Anatomy & Morphology

Elves are humanoids, with slim, light builds that are the same height or slightly taller than humans.

Genetics and Reproduction

Elves take sex lightly and children very seriously. They have relations with all other peoples, and have genetics that allow them to reproduce with most other mammalian peoples of the world.

Growth Rate & Stages

Elves are functionally immortal, provided that their ecological feature remains in good condition, but they reach physical and mental maturity by 25. Elf culture is centred around preparing the young to live long lives.

Ecology and Habitats

Elves may travel, but always retain their link to their associated ecological feature. Elf villages can be found in and among these features. For each group of Elves, this is their ideal habitant.

Dietary needs and habits

Elves are omnivores with a preference for plants. All known Elves have a love of fish for reasons Sages cannot fathom, and will eat it at almost any opportunity if they've had it before.

Biological Cycle

Elves are effectively immortal under most conditions, and only show age when they get over 500. Usually around 1000 to 1200, Elves feel a call back to their ecologicial feature, where they head out into the wilderness and fade away, with sparks and lights draining from them into the soil, rocks, and plants, until they disappear. Small markers are set up in places this occurs, and they are seen as lucky.

History

Elves were created out of the magic of the world that concentrated to create the special ecological locations that they have deep links in. They arose at the same time dragons did, and often share a near symbiotic relationship with them. They are scattered and not a single people, they don't even share a common langauge of their own, using Draconic to communicate with outside Elves when the opportunity, or necessity, presents itself. Much of Elven history is tied up in preserving the ecological features they are linked to, resisiting missionairies from the Followers of the Elemental Court, and having adventures or studying arcane magic for fun.

Interspecies relations and assumptions

Elves ar enotoriously standoffish until a person or group has proven themselves safe to have anound. They get alonf famously with orcs, somewhat with humans (humans are the #1 cause of the destruction of their ecological conneciton). Elves get along famously with Dragonfolk and Dragonkin, and have a generally low opinion of Armigers.
