One noisy night

"Right away, father." The girl scampered away, not waiting to see if you followed or not. You kept up with her and followed the young girl up the stairs and down a small, cramped hallway. At the end of the hallway, she opened a door and asked in a polite little voice, "Is there anything else you need?" You smile again, trying to make her a little more comfortable around you. "This will do just fine, thank you." She nodded before disappearing again. The room was just a little more than large closet. Two beds were crammed next to the wall on either side of the only window and a chest lay directly beneath the window sill. You flop down on the corn husk mattress with a sigh. Today has been so confusing and you're exhausted. As the sky grows darker outside your window, you finally lever yourself up on your elbow to get a better view through your window. No farmers were out in the fields anymore and the sun slowly sunk below the treeline. Candles were being lit in houses as families sat down for dinner. As you sink drowsily back onto the bed, you think, This place may not be so bad after all. Few hours later, someone is shaking you awake. Groaning softly, you roll over and fall out of the narrow bed. Aslanda jumped back to avoid getting caught under you as you fell. The painful shock made you come more awake. "Who? Where... Oh, right. What is it, Aslanda?" "Father says for me to get you. Come hurry. We must get away!" She tugged at your sleeve and nearly fell down because she was pulling so hard. "Woah, what's the hurry?" you ask. You almost laughed if it weren't for the scared look evident all over her face. Aslanda pointed out the window as she continued pulling at your sleeve. "Raiders came to the village! Must get out of here or we'll be taken!" Glancing out the window, you gasp as you spot several houses on the other side of the village already on fire. As the girl drags you down the stairs, you ask, "Where are the police? Won't they take care of it?" She looks at you quizzically. "Police? No, no one help us here. But some believe that the phantoms help us. My father does, but I don't. They're silly. Phantoms can't chase away raiders." You both freeze as the locked front door of the inn nearly gets burst open by someone or something ramming against it. A quick glance out the window reveals the several battle ax wielding warriors standing outside holding torches. "Is there a back door, Aslanda?" You ask while running through the kitchen. "Aye, this way." You nearly fall as she jerks you through the store room and unlatches the back door. Aslanda cried out and hid behind your legs as a huge Mevolen warrior stepped between you and freedom. Your hand flew to the tiny dagger you had in your belt, but it would be useless against his ax. He grinned as he spoke in a broken, raspy voice. Almost as if he didn't know how to use the language he was speaking in. "You and little missy thar better come with me. Quickly too." When you didn't move he reached for his ax and the blood drained from your face. His fingers had barely touched the handle of his deadly weapon before he fell down with an arrow in his back. Aslanda grabbed your hand again and tore out of the village with you in tow. Not stopping to see who had slain your attacker. You both were greeted at the forest by Innkeeper Quarly who ushered everyone deeper into the wood.
