Milliner's Square

Always bustling with life, Milliner's Square is the finest center for both shopping and eating in the district. For fair prices, one may acquire any of the common needs of daily life, and any number of more specific or niche offerings, as well as any number of simple luxuries. Those seeking fare of higher cost or supplies of a magical nature beyond the common man's needs for healing or general mundane utility should head a mere two levels upwards to the manifold shops of the iconic Path of the Arcane, discussed in it's own segment elsewhere.   There are many fine inns established near the Square, although my recommendation would be the Emerald Sands if one seeks the best accommodation for reasonable price. Higher class accommodations can again, be found higher in the district.   If stories of heroism and thwarted evil are the aim of one's travel, there is a small museum maintained by the Merchant Council which maintains the square that retells the story of a heroic band's quest to expose a sinister plot by a small band of wealthy businessmen with dreams of seizing control of the very nation. While one would think events such as this would leave this place legendary, it seems to be one of all too many examples of deranged men willing to cast all others aside in pursuit of power, only to be cast down by those they thought beneath them. The museum showcases a short projection about the events of that fateful Spring night, as well as several charming reenacted mannequin scenes of conspirators at work and a small display of the few hats used in the conspiracy that survived spellbreaking.   While far from a destination in their own right, the history of the district and the sheer variety and convenience of the Square make it an incredibly useful stop to any passing through the area.

Infrastructure

One may easily access Milliner's Square via the main public boatways of the city, with one merely a street's length away from the southernmost entrance. From the northeastern entrance, it is convenient to hire a taxi or similar transport at any hour of day or night. Within, public fountains may be found to fill one's waterskin in many a convenient location. In addition to this, the square offers many fine places to sit and enjoy one's repast or time with a friend.

Guilds and Factions

In addition to falling under the jurisdiction of the District Council, Milliner's Square is owned and maintained by a collective of businesses that have formed a shared council to collect simple administrative fees that are used to keep the infrastructure of the square clean and well-maintained. This is generally agreed to be a well-managed example of such an organization, with high participation in all elections and other votes.

History

Milliner's Square was initially used as a factory and sales facility for fine hats aimed at wealthy ladies, both distinctive varieties and custom orders for the especially wealthy. Tragically, this early history would come to a complicated ending as the rot within became exposed. As investigations proceeded, it became increasingly apparent that recent ownership had thought to exploit their wide reach and customer base for an unusually nefarious scheme. They had begun scheming to produce hats loaded with potent curses designed to make sleeper agents out of their clients, using them as spies among the upper class. Through the efforts of a small, but highly effective group of heroes, this plot was averted before their enchanted product could be delivered.
