Lemorum Legio (Ghost Legion)

Historical notes

The legion of the dead, as it is sometimes called, was established during the seventh Roman Republic, during one of the worst moments in the existence of Rome. In 2455 A.U.C. the transoceanic provinces rebelled en masse, due to the agitation caused by the neighboring Mayan Republic to destabilize the Roman Republic, and the legions present in place instead of intervening to suppress the rebellion refused to fight, isolating themselves in the northernmost part of the continent. The parliament declared all the legionnaires belonging to the two treacherous legions, the XXI Silvana and the XXII Herculea, sentenced to death in absentia. At the end of the bloody pacification campaign of the provinces, which had rapidly degenerated into a real war against the Mayan Republic, both the legions and the civilian population were on their last legs while the two legions condemned to death had suffered fewer losses despite after the first year of the war, their not taking sides had made them targets for both Roman and Mayan forces. So the military consul of the time, Diemarus Antonius, made a proposal to the survivors: instead of being put to death they would be part of a new legion, the Lemurum Legio, or legion of ghosts. This penal legion would contain within it only legionaries condemned to death, who would be used as avant-garde in each clash, redeeming their own dishonor with their own death. Many accepted, and the first order of the legion was the extermination of those who had refused to join it, which was a swift if brutal affair.

Characteristics of the legion

Thanks to the particular recruitment system, the legion does not have a defined number of operators, and usually ranges between 1000 and 2000 units. Those who enter the legion have several reasons to choose it instead of accepting the death sentence, but often it is simply the possibility of postponing their death, perhaps studying an escape in the meantime. This possibility has been clearly taken into consideration by the military chiefs, which subject all new recruits to a 6-month brainwashing program, in order to eliminate any residual disloyalty and to increase loyalty to a level of fanaticism that could even surpass the Praetorian Guard. Since its foundation the legion of the dead has always been distinguished by two details, the ferocity both inside and outside of combat and the high number of losses, which usually oscillates between 50% and 60%. Although modern technology has partially remedied this, thanks to cybernetic implants and organs created in vitro, which have lowered losses to 40% in the last 20 years. This fact, however, led to an exasperation of the ferocity of the legion, due to the illusion of being considered precious by the central command (in fact they are often used as guinea pigs for experimental implants) and the fact that for some people the installation of cybernetics implants is addictive, prompting them to launch themselves with even greater abandonment against the enemy, in the hope of being damaged enough to obtain new implants.

Modern times

This is reflected in the fact that, unlike the rest of the legions that are highly disciplined and give the best of themselves when they are in defensive positions the legion of ghosts has an approach based exclusively on the attack, so that sometimes the commanders on the field have found themselves in the situation of having to send them away from a battle, because their tendency to attack would always mess up the formations. At the moment the legion is stationed onPalatinus, with the task of freeing the areas for colonization from ferocious animals, but some animal rights associations are already protesting because they do not limit themselves to the destruction of ferocious animals, but of everything that moves.

This Legio, while smaller than the other legions has the same hierarchy.
