Music

Music is sound waves plus intention, kid. Simple and powerful as that.
— Qiofa Teacher Nacen
Music is the means for getting most things done in Rom. Making a cup of tea, moving a piano, or finding your way to work all get easier with the power of music. There are specific melodies that allow people to move objects. Others control elements. Some can summon documents from storage in the ether. If there's a task that you want to accomplish, there's a melody for that.   Now, not all Idrans, or even Fiej, are able to remember or execute the proper melodies. Or maybe their minds are scattered, and they can't hold the intention strong enough to make music work. No problem! There are plenty of Academy trained musicians that are willing to trade their musical services for appropriate compensation. For smaller tasks, The Singing Crystals are a convenient alternative.   It's possible to sing or whistle most melodies, as these are fairly uniform methods of making music. The use of particular instruments can amplify one's intention and sound waves. This will make music more potent. Examples are referenced to the right.

Common Myths

  • Birds (or other non-humans) can work music. Especially thought to be true in Jofi. See for example Parro and the Bird.
  • Mixing music is safe. Types of music can only be mixed by Academy-trained musicians with proper licenses. All other mixing of music is strictly forbidden. Do not drum and whistle!
  • Music can wake the dead.
  • Music can control other people's intentions.
