Vitalisor Mage

The Profession of the Vitalisor came into existence as a means of raising the quality of life in barren locations such as Serenia or Limbago.
A Vitalisor is proficient in growing and preserving plant-life with mainly magical, but also non-magical means. Their services are required in regions where simple gardening can be very difficult or even unachievable with every-day methods such as simple watering and sun-bathing. Usual work for a mage is to keep small backyard gardens, house plants or small fields alive in a dry climate. On rare occasions, vitalisors are employed on regular farms as a premium workforce or supervisors.

History

When the business opportunity of magic garden-keeping first arose around 300 A.t.F., Vitalisors were mostly self-employed mages coming to the craft from other fields of the arcane arts. In today's economic climate, Vitalisors are mostly seen employed by businesses that sign contract work or work on commission. Popular businesses in Serenia include:
  • Governor's Houseplants
  • Kipman Meadows
  • Serenia Contemporary Preservation

Career

Qualifications

Common hiring prerequisites in vitalization businesses are that a mage has:
  1. Graduated in a state-approved school of magic.
  2. A portfolio of clients that approve of their work
  3. Pass an interview with a practice task to showcase their skills
Although there are many entry-level job postings, companies like Governor's Houseplants require a certain amount of previous work experience.

Career Progression

A mage that is new to the craft or recently graduated will be self-employed at first. Until they have reached a fair amount of successful work-experience from clients, they can reach out to a company or, if their services have built a reputation, stay in the self-owned sector.   If they choose to apply and pass the interview stage, a new hire will find themselves at the bottom of the company structure. A freshly hired mage will usually enter at the level of Grower. Growers are responsible for the repetitive and lower level vitalising works. E.g. middle-class garden-keeping, city-contracted work or commissioned plant-keeping. The average loan of a Grower is 1 GP an hour.
Once a grower has earned enough reputation in the company, they may be promoted to Senior Grower. This allows them to take on jobs in higher-class districts and may be put on a permanent assignment to a noble's residence. For a Senior Grower, the average loan is 2 GP an hour.
A Senior Grower may rise to the position of a Vitality Mage at the judgement of another employee in the same position. This employment either lets them stay in the field, or take on a more bureaucratic role, assigning work to lower-level employees. Vitality Mages are also allowed to take on higher public service assignments such as the Palace grounds, Elven Archive premises or University gardens. The average pay for a Vitality Mage is 4 GP. Furthermore, they may be provided with company-owned housing in a higher middle-class district.
Senior Mages are part of the top hierarchy of a Vitalisation company, their form of service can also be different depending on which career path they chose at the Vitalisor Mage level. Senior Mages are a highly requested among the upper class of Serenia, but also in the grander Human Kingdom as their profession spread. Mages that choose to stay in the bureaucratic element may be in talks of becoming business associates to the company and increase their pay immensely, although the exact pay varies from business to business.

Other Benefits

Top level Mages in companies are usually very reputable as they have been in the craft for a long time. Certain clients may know their name and recommend their services to other, more wealthier clients. As part of a company, they may benefit from the brand of their company alone. For example, Governor's Houseplants is known for supplying the only mages that keep the plants in the Governors residence and office. This allows lower-level employees to have a boost in the reputation of a job they can take up, but also raises their requirements for the employment.
