Shār Outskirts

The Shār Outskirts describes an area of the Shār that extends from the edge of the treeline that defines the Shār Proper to roughly 25 miles further in. This region is the only region of the Shār that is well-known, to some degree, to science. Although expeditions into the Shār outskirts are still perilous due to its abundant and aggressive wildlife, these dangers can be mitigated with the presence of a local expert and well-armed company. The area has proved fruitful for wildlife researchers as despite lying on the outskirts of the Shār, there is an astonishing diversity of life in the region.

Geography

As an area defined by the distance from the borders of the Shār Proper, the Shār Outskirts have a varied geography. Between the western and eastern sides of the Shār Outskirts, elevations can vary from as low as 33 ft (10 m) above sea level to as high as 1640 ft (500 m) above sea level respectively. The presence of a number of rivers flowing out of the Shār toward the west indicates that the general trend of the elevation gradient in the Shār Outskirts is relatively consistent throughout the entire jungle. This also hints at the presence of multiple drainage basins in the area, leading many to believe that the interior of the Shār is considerably less uniform in elevation that initially thought.

Fauna & Flora

Though a very thin strip of the overall area of the Shār, the Shār Outskirts present a staggering diversity of life nonetheless. Areas of the Shār Outskirts further to the south have not been explored as well as its northern regions. Surveys of the areas closest to Sharan communities suggest that an area of four square miles of rainforest is home to over a thousand different species of plants and many more species of animals, with a particular diversity in bird and insect species.   Among the most prominent species in the region are the haadiq, a highly-territorial and semi-aquatic species of large cat that inhabits the wet areas and rivers of the Shār Outskirts, subsisting primarily on fish and waterfowl, and the king's tower, a species of flowering plant best known for its large phallic flowers and the deathly odour it produces when in bloom.
