Efristan Coastal Guard Military Formation in Rising Seas | World Anvil

Efristan Coastal Guard

The increasing raids on towns, villages, fishing fleets and coastal traders is greatly disrupting our abilities to send the supplies you request. If you wish supply lines to remain steady then it is imperative that you send aid to deal with these problems.
— Letter from Mayor Dramthowin to Imperial Court

A Growing Problem

The coastal regions of The Empire of Efristan are still populated with towns and villages, and even a few cities. Some of these were previously inland settlements, but after the last Rising are now coastal settlements. Some have been built since the Rising, as the sea is still a valuable source of food and resources.   Many of these settlements have become targets for raiders and pirates, either by direct attacks or attacks on the ships which ply their trade around the coastal seas. Up until a few years ago, the Empire had been spending most of its time and resources on dealing with the host of refugees that had fled from the flooded coastlines, and the multitude of problems that this brought.   Whilst they had tasked the navy with ensuring that merchant convoys were protected, the coastal settlements were still vulnerable to attacks from a growing pirate and raider problem. This began to have a negative impact on the Empire's food chain, and it wasn't long before the Empire turned its efforts towards solving this problem. The Efristan Coastal Guard was formed, and tasked with protecting the coastal setlements and fishing grounds.

A local Force

The members of the Coastal Guard are recruited from amongst the local populations where possible. Not only will they be more vigillant in defending their own hometowns, but also have a greater knowledge of the local seas. They number approximately two hundred, and at least three quarters of those are from local settlements. They have a fleet of fifteen ships and each ship is usually crewed by ten to fifteen sailors. The ships and their crews are rotated, with there always being two ships on shore leave at any one time.   The remit of the Coastal Guard has grown quite a bit in the few years it has been operational. What started out as simple patrols of the coastal waters, has now grown to encompass search and rescue, escorting other vessels, and rooting out small raiding groups. The crews have become quite good at what they do, and their efforts have ensured the continued supply of food and resources from the coastal regions.
