Charme Center Prison
Criminals are rife almost anywhere in the world.
And many have been given a place in prisons or asylums or hospitals where they are held, treated and housed until they have served their due sentence for their crimes. They have come from all walks of life and all races known, but only so many have been amongst the worst criminals of the worst who have been granted time to serve for their actions. Many have died in prison by methods of execution, but a number have also been released and go on to continue their deeds or to recover and do their best to contribute to society to become better men and women than they had been before.
One such figure of the former group was a member of the Psedi race. Her name was Selaqa. She preferred however to be known as Serena St. Claire, or her other title: The Surgeon.
Her history is long and deadly, and even so, she has been apprehended more than once and held in prisons and jails across the country - and even on different continents on occasion in attempt to keep her away from the world - and yet has managed to escape or to serve every single sentence she has been handed.
But for her most nefarious act, she was finally placed in Charme Center Prison, which was a prison located on an island several miles beyond the shoreline, separated from the coast in an attempt to lessen the possibility of a successful escape to land from the prison itself.
By history, Charme Center Prison had actually started out as a massive vessel called The Caldecot Castle, and was a famous paddle steamer hailing from the upper coast of Opron, but had been put out of service after a new series of steamers had been introduced to take it's place in the early years of the twentieth century. It was grounded on the island during a heavy storm and landed near the island's peak, where it was soon after abandoned and left to break apart. When the city realized that the machine had no use, they travelled to the island and began a project to turn the old steamboat into a prison facility to house criminals from the country who had no major prison to be kept in other than the one that was located in Opron Center, the capital of Garden County, Opron.
After five years and an immense amount of funding and construction work, the Caldecot Prison was finally opened, named after the ship that had been transformed into the prison's main holding center. Surrounded by large concrete and stone walls and provided with a twenty-four hour watch, the prison opened a few months after it was completed, needing time for the training of the officers that would work there and keep the prisoners in check during their stay. Over the next few years even while prisoners were sentenced in the prison, renovations continued in order to enlarge the facility to hold more and more prisoners. In total, it could hold over five-hundred prisoners at total capacity, along with the guards who worked there and the owner of the prison himself, who lived in a secured building just outside the main walls and which was built with underground facilities for safety in case of an emergency in the prison complex. Around the same time that the full renovations had been completed, Caldecot Prison was renamed to Charme Center Prison, after the city itself across from which the prison was located.
The only way to and from the island was by boat, and a special ship was designed and built to accomodate the prisoners being shipped there. Constructed with standard bulkheads and other amenities, instead of cabins the compartments were filled with small, cramped cells with no windows and only a bed to lie on during their trip. All possessions were either left in the city in a customs port, were removed when arriving on Charme Center Prison's island, or were thrown over the side of the vessel during the trip to prevent the items from ever being recovered.
Amongst it's most notable prisoners was Serena St. Claire, The Surgeon. She was involved with a plot that had centered around the murder of Agnes Albergotti, a woman who Serena had found a deep-seated hatred towards for unknown reasons. Due to their distance apart, only one attempt was made by Serena herself to murder Albergotti, an attempt which involved a night on the town and the performance of a short musical piece inside a tavern in an attempt to have Albergotti drink a poisoned beer. It would have succeeded, had Serena remembered that the particular drink she had ordered for Albergotti was in fact made from a fruit which was an allergen that Albergotti avoided due to it's lethality. She declined the beverage while not knowing it had been poisoned, thus thwarting Serena's plot. Shortly thereafter, they exited the tavern where Serena was met by the Albergotti Family and was subsequently charged by Albergotti herself with attempted murder. The resulting trial was influenced by the extended members of the Family and their involvement in the government bodies, which some claim led to a unanimous and corrupt trial and sentence. None the less, she was transferred to Charme City Prison and was handed a life sentence for her attempt.
She went on to survive this, due to the extended lifespan of the Psedi, before she moved to Aswary only to continue her sprees of murder and subsequent imprisonment, even long after Agnes passed away in the unfortunate surprise attack during a traffic stop in her home city. To everyone's surprise, Serena attended the funeral of her would-be victim, praising her tenacity, her fortitude and her endless reputation of always overcoming those who had expected less from her in her lifetime. She had even prepared a eulogy for the event, and was allowed to speak during said event in honor of Agnes.
Shortly after the latter's death, Serena spent a period of her life in relapse, living in seclusion and lacking in her murderous craft seemingly in reverence to her old enemy who she had never managed to outsmart. It seemed, in the end, that in some way or another that Agnes Albergotti had in fact outlived Serena St. Claire.
All the same, Charme City Prison still stands in use today and is kept in lockdown state permanently to keep all held prisoners from escaping, only breaking this lockdown to allow new prisoners to be brought in to serve their own sentences for their own nefarious crimes.
It has survived into the twenty-first century with new modifications for safety as well as increased capacity, but the ownership has passed down from the family to new unrelated ownership by city officials and officers.
