Saira Kato

The Untainted

Saira Hanae Kato was a young woman in The Broken Era, who was later discovered to have the body of a human and a complete, untainted Psykrie for a soul. She is the only instance of such a hybrid entity ever recorded. She functioned as a "messenger" of The Oversoul, communicating Their desires to the Empyrean Norah Maier-Flynn. She trained in Skepsiexosis under Norah Maier-Flynn, and served as the Interpersonal Relay to Draylix Empire Treasury Auxiliary Alex Wolf, who she later assassinated in retaliation for her father's death at his command. She is responsible for the destruction of The Hollow and played a vital role in the destruction of The Resonance and the freeing of the Psykrie.

History

A Love for the Sky

Saira was born in Isolde, Aroha, DE to Lower-Upper Class parents Kaveri Deol-Kato and Hideki Kato-Deol, with a 5-year-old paternal half-sister named Aria Kato. Isolde was a calm town of roughly 40,000 surrounded by woods, grasslands and lakes. Nestled deep in Aroha territory, Saira was spared direct exposure to the Lumian War and class conflicts that rampaged through much of the Empire at that time.
From a very young age, even before she'd learned to speak, Saira had an inexplicable and indomitable obsession with the sky. Saira would often be found crying inconsolably on the roof of the family home, claiming she needed to get closer. Even she could not say what exactly she felt the need to be closer to, but she knew there was something out there that was calling to her and that she would never be satisfied until she knew what it was.
Saira's parents both worked busy jobs, yet she had a very positive relationship with her family. She was exceptionally close with her father, who was a secret practicer of Luism. As such, Saira was raised with an intense fascination with lost Luist texts, the Shin'en, The Hikari, and even went so far as to learn some Japanese to help her father in his translation efforts. She was taught that it was a Luists highest calling to continue deciphering lost texts and protect them from those who would destroy them. She was especially fascinated with the Akuma, the demons of Luist mythology, and drew a connection between them and the recent Vaire outbreaks. Much of her time was spent with her father carefully binding, preserving, and translating his scattered and ever-growing collection of texts.
Saira was trained in self-defense starting at 8 years old, becoming adept with a dagger. She begged her father to train her with a katana -- the sacred weapon of a Luist -- but he promised he would when she was older.
Her father was also a descendant of the Arjun with faint ties to the Arjun Reclamation. He instilled values of the "ideal society" into his daughters, regaling glorious tales of the Arjun of old and teaching them to value tolerance and equal opportunity, as well as to reject any sense of superiority over Mogs and the Unempowered. This was quite contrary to the Draylix culture of the time, where all but the Empowered were seen as second-class citizens and less valuable to society.
Saira later discovered that her father was using his job as an inhibition agent to smuggle Sanctive texts and technologies out of the empire, using his Reclamation ties to exchange the documents’ ensured safe passage to other Luists for information valuable to the Reclamation.

Manifestation

At age 12, Saira's manifestation was one well-prepared for, yet still immensely difficult. Hideki had given her far more pre-inhibition training than average. Even so, while Psionic manifestations are not as flashy or high-damage as others, it takes a great mental, physical, and emotional toll on all who experience it or are near it. This was compounded by the manifest being Empyrexosis , which she was only the twenty-second person to ever possess, meaning no one knew exactly how it worked or how to properly deal with it.
Saira's manifestation began directly after the death of her childhood friend Elias Cage's mother. She had been fatally injured in a Vex accident, and Saira was at the hospital with Elias to support him. Cage's mother was in excruciating pain as she passed, and the emotional intensity of the situation triggered Saira's manifestation. Saira felt a heavy sense of fear from Cage's mother, and was inundated with physical pain, desperation, despair, and loss. As she died, Saira felt as if she herself was dying, and she panicked. Elias' despair in that moment compounded with his mother's and she completely lost control. She began to feel the pain and suffering of the entire hospital floor, and her screams transformed into an intense kinetic blast that nearly destroyed the room.
Saira managed to escape to a manifest-proof safe-room, and Hideki was able to calm her significantly through the door and eventually sedate her. Her manifestation continued at a low level for many days, and she suffered an intense case of Manifest Sickness. It took weeks for her to fully learn to shut off her ability.

Going into Hiding

Once Hideki was able to identify her manifest as Skepsiexosis and Kinesiexosis, the family was swept into action. Skepsiexosis itself was a blacklisted ability, mandating either undesirable government work for life, incarceration, or possibly even execution, and they had no idea what the government's reaction would be to a double manifest, as it was practically unheard of. Despite the fact he was legally required to register Saira's ability, Hideki decided to take his entire family off the grid to protect Saira, claiming he "knew how bad the IR's had it", that they were indentured into life servitude to a profession that suffered frequent sexual exploitation and were front in line for government assassinations. He bought them a large house in the deep woods dozens of kilometers outside of Spiros Prime.
Kaveri -- who worked in a hospital as an anesthesiologist -- managed to forge documents diagnosing Saira with severe immunodeficiency excusing her from public school, and Saira spent the next several years confined to the house with little outside contact. She was allowed to leave on the weekends in the presence of Aria or a parent and was to give a wide berth to public places unless they were used for training purposes. She was also allowed weekend visits with Elias, who she wrote letters to frequently. Their new home was spacious and accommodating in order to provide Saira with as much freedom and as many things as possible. Hideki spent many weekends training her to have strong control over abilities. He is baffled by her use of seemingly two separate exosias, but that simply reinforces his desire to protect her from discovery, and he trains her in the usage of both.
Confined to her home, Saira began to suffer from depression, and dove into many topics and hobbies as a distraction.

• She was a history buff, reading as much as she could find on the history of the Empire and all other known countries and regions. She viewed this as a way to contextualize Luist texts. She also enjoyed Cataclysm theories.

• She studied the Hikari religiously, her personal copy had hardly a clean margin for all of the notes she took.

• She sketched surrealist landscapes and creatures, which she claimed she saw in her dreams. Doing so would sometimes temporarily sate her sky-pull.

• She practiced Cosmetology (an intensely culturally significant practice), and would daydream of going out in public to show it off.

• She learned Mandarin as her chosen language in school, and partial Japanese with her father.

• She kept up on modern politics by reading any newspaper she could get her hands on and getting updates from her father about his work.

• She sparred frequently with Aria, practicing her dagger into muscle memory, then expanding to bo-staffs and eventually the katana.

• She was utterly fascinated with astronomy, and decorated her room to look like the night sky. This became an outlet for her sky-pull.

• She became adept at sneaking out of and into the house unnoticed on the rare occasions which she became desperate for freedom.

Total Unraveling

Saira’s life, while perhaps lonely and isolated, ultimately seemed to be alright, and it remained that way for the first year of hiding. At age 13, things began to fall apart.
Hideki’s smuggling had been discovered by the Treasury Directorate, and they blackmailed Hideki into acts of false court testimony and cover-ups regarding the blacklisted manifests of the relatives of high level court officials. In order to convince the judicial Psions that the testimony was genuine, he was forced to submit to memory alteration and erasure. Disgusted at the moral violations and concerned about the potential alteration of otherwise unrelated memories in further service of the DoT or other entities, Hideki quickly made plans to flee the country with his family. However, before being able to execute his plan, he was arrested and forced to join the Lumian War draft.
