Dontikanichi Species in Renúdetla | World Anvil

Dontikanichi

One of the largest known predators on Renúdetla. In present times this species been verifiably seen only a small handful of occasions, and at a great distance. It has been commonly mistaken for a great spirit as a result. It is presumed that this creature is largely responsible for the many failed attempts to penetrate the inner regions of The Wilds. The Dontikanichi are one of the few named animals in the Ornithian Empire that retain their original name in the ancient tongue; which translates to tooth and claw.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Dontikanichi walk on two feet, powered by enormous bipedal legs that come equipped with three enormous claws on each of its toes. The tail represents approximately a total third of its length, to account for balance while running. The two upper limbs are muscular and long enough to reach the ground to act as forelegs when attacking or pouncing on prey. At the tip of each of the four fingers sprout claws that measure almost meter in length. The fourth finger is placed more medial to the body and acts as a semi-opposable digit. The head of a Dontikanichi measures approximately 1.5 - 2 meters in length. The jaws possess extraordinary strength, capable of crushing the bones of a fully grown Wilds Belephant and are lined with rows of teeth as long as knives. The Dontikanichi's top speed is believed to be somewhere around 50 km per hour.

Ecology and Habitats

These beasts stalk the savannas of The Wilds and dominate as an apex predator. A living relic from a more violent period on Renúdetla, the Dontikanichi is thought to predate a majority species found in the Wilds; many defense mechanisms seem to have been developed as a direct response to the animal.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Exclusively carnivorous. Primarily preys on juvenile Maklaimós. However, one has been observed charging a herd of Wildbeasts, so it is assumed that most other grazing animal species are also targets of attack.
