History

Aliim

The Lucroe were once the dominant people of the Aliim island. Their society spanned the bulk of the land mass, sans the very few insular orc settlements along the coastlines. As a people, they were highly progressive in their agricultural techniques, their architecture, and their level of technological advancement- but much more importantly than that, they were highly advanced in their study of magic. Relative to all other past societies, Lucroe were the masters of understanding and utilizing magic.
However, during [fuckall time [blah blah]], Aliim experienced a terrible earthquake storm which destroyed many of their cities and settlements across the Lucroe nation. The seismic activity from the earthquakes then spurred most of their volcanoes into an almost cataclysmic series of volcanic eruptions.

Veriasua

Those that survived the disaster in Aliim migrated onto the main body of the Veriasuian continent. There they lived as a minority group in Veriasuian society. Their biological status as elves kept them from being condemned to slavery like some other sapiens, but their slightly different physical appearance (shorter, red eyes, and grey-ish skin) made them easy to distinguish at a glance and from their foreign culture, they made an easy target for their differences. Ever since their first integration to the main populus they fell into the role of scapegoats for unfortunate events; often blamed for rises in crime during periods of conflict, spurring on economic recessions, and causing food shortages during unfulfilling harvests. During this time, Lucroe became known as drow by Veriasuian society.

Tensions would also come from many conflicting cultural perspectives. Religiously speaking, the Lucroe were an extremely devout people. They worshiped their own spirits, with some partially following the orcish pantheon- pushes to convert to the Veriasuian pantheon by the natives were met first with gentle rebuff, then with harsh resistance. Nearly all Lucroe elves refused to recognize Veriasuian gods as their own. As a form of spite, most Veriasuian cities refused to recognize or even allow Lucroe religious/cultural holidays and celebrations to be held within city limits.

The Lucroe would entirely reject the then rising structure of High Houses and protest the further creeping divides in the Veriasuian class system. Most of all they rejected and condemned the increasing reliance on slavery throughout the Veriasuian empire. The enslavement of orcs was a particular point of conflict for many Lucroe. The Lucroe had previously shared cities with migrated orcs who had sailed to Aliim to expand and settle- orcs who had then become equal standing people that made great allies in their homeland. Lucroe culture was deeply influenced by orcish culture and vice versa. The Lucroe's merging with orcish society is often attributed to the existence of stainsan orcs. However now in Veriasuian society, their once kinsmen were treated worse than animals.

Over time, things slowly changed for the worse for the Lucroe people. Their avid defense of orcs and the freshly arisen (then enslaved) dwarves only further nurtured animosity from the Veriasuian government and the general populous. The rising use of Vitae by native upper class Veriasuians created a dangerous power gap in governmental affairs. Legislation further restricting the rights of the Lucroe began to frequent the Acredynum's hearings. This reached a peak during the transition of rule to Emperor-King Daelune Primaetria. Under the direct command of Daelune Primaetria, Lucroe personhood was entirely revoked by Veriasuian law and a call for their execution in mass was sent out.
To escape, the surviving Lucroe headed underground following the paths the dwarves had made getting into Veriasua. After entering and collapsing the caves behind them to prevent pursuit, they made their way forward through the abandoned tunnel systems. There, they settled. Eventually they came across the Eventually they came across the cities of Igder.

Modern Day

In the modern day, Lucroe have become the Drow

Physical Attributes

Their key integration of magic into their society may have marked them in more ways than one. It is likely early Lucroe elves so commonly experienced magical overextension or magical overexposure in their studies that it affected their genetics. While over time as a people they became much more resilient to magical fatigue, the history of that study and strain remained in their blood. Their eyes are often assumed to have resulted from this same history of magical overextension, and while possible, the redness of their eyes could also attributed to the benefit red eyes pose to such a highly nocturnal and crepuscular society. It is theorized it was possible that magical genetic engineering accelerated the evolutionary shift to include that distinct red eye feature, though this is debated.

Culture

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Lucroe adopted the orcish arts of face paints and tattoos into their culture long ago, and it still thrives in the customs of some modern drow.

Funerary and Memorial customs

When they still lived above ground in their homeland, the Lucroe first would hold large pyres for their deceased; afterword they would collect the ash and set them adrift on rafts, out to sea or down a main river.   When they lived above ground in Veriasua, they were forced to bury their dead in either single or group graves.   Once they had moved underground, the Lucroe followed funeral traditions similar to duergar, laying their dead in lava rivers.
