Mutiny on the Sunset Dawn

The Conflict

Prelude

After the attack on the Sunset Dawn where the pirates barely escaped with their lifes at the crossing of the Greenwich meridian and the equator. The weeks without anything happening while they were docked in Cape Town waiting for the diamonds to be cut. And then the tail they had which resulted in the Sunset Dawn having to go as far South as South goes trough the Antarctic Ocean into the Indian Ocean to get rid of the boat following them.

Now the crew of the Sunset Dawn was unhappy, the ship was in the wrong ocean, they had a highly valuable cargo on board which they couldn't touch, an unidentified enemy, and they hadn't hunted anyone in months.

Battlefield

The fighting takes place in the interiour spaces and on the decks of the pirate vessel; Sunset Dawn.

The Engagement

The unrest had been brewing for a week already, Michael noticed it among the sailors, and secretly informed Jan de Jongh about it. Together they tried to keep the crew busy, but after the weeks of doing nothing in Cape Town, there wasn't much maintenance left to do. Also, the weather in the Indian Ocean was calm and constant so there weren't many sail changes either.

After the Captain passed the opertunity thrice to attack a lonely yacht, choosing to push on towards the Panama Canal to make their agreement of the delivery of the stones on time. It was too much for some of the crew and the rebelled.

Monday evening

On Monday evening, Lester Logan and Lasse Andreasen planned to sneak into Rose's cabin to prematurely end her Captaincy by ending her life with a quick stroke of a knife. But the brothers Ashton and Leon Owen, and their wife Alice Owen-Ryder found out about their plans and tried to warn the Captain about the danger she was in.

Unfortunatly the three Owens didn't survive their warning attempt, and all of them ended with their throats slit in a dark corner of the ship. Anna Carlton accidently found the bodies seconds after they were killed and managed to raise the alarm. Waking the entire ship to chaos.

Tuesday morning

What exactly happened during that night is unclear, but in the morning Rose, her officers, the bosun and a group of sailors where baricaded inside her cabin, armed with a random arrangement of hand weapons.

Bobby had locked himself in, in the engine room, with a few other sailors, and had managed to call to the captain's cabin to find out what was going on. After which he cut the power and communication to the entire ship.

Alejandro, Heinrich and some others had barricaded themselves in the powder room and controlled the galley and the forward store rooms from there. They didn't pick a side in the beginning but just fought to survive. The sailors in their group didn't know which side to join first, as they felt there were good arguments from the mutineers only they didn't agree on the actions and would've liked to put it up for a honest vote instead.

Logan and his mutineering mates controlled the deck, the gun deck and the hold, where the diamonds were stored.

Logan's group lost two people and got two wounded in the first round of fighting. From the group with Rose, both Jan de Jongh and Marshmallow where injured, the second mate incapacitated and loosing blood trough a massive wound in his leg.

Tuesday afternoon

Michael and Aleksey pulled up the floorboards in the captain's cabin to reach the steering gear. As they had noticed from the portholes that the ship had remained sailing even with the power cut. The rudder was stuck in midship position, so Logan was controlling the ship's course by the sails. After ensuring entrance to the steering gear room, they used the emergency steering equipment to manually pump the rudder hard to starboard. Making it unable to sail, as the ship was ever trying to go in circles.

After they disabled the rudder, Logan gave the captain an ultimatum of three hours to surrender and give up her position. Rose, not inclined to do so, told him he could go fuck himself.

At the same time Logans group tried to break into the galley so they'd have control over the food source, but Alejandro defended his domain fervidly. Alejandro remained unharmed, but he lost a good knife in the chest of Ivan.

Tuesday night

During the night Logan and his man tried to enter the captain's cabin by lowering themselves with ropes over the stern of the ship. Attacking under the cover of darkness and smashing in the windows to surprise the people inside. The crew inside the captain's cabin was actually awake and standby. The intruder stood out against the moonlight more than they thought, so it turned into price shooting for the people around Rose.

Wednesday morning

At sunrise Rose staged a return attack, by sending some people out the broken windows and over the stern the way Logan's man had tried before, and simultaneously burst out of the cabin onto the gun deck and via the companion way to the main deck. Logan's men were surprised, as they were tired of being awake and on the top of their nerve the whole night.

Bobby hearing the noise of the fighting bursted out of the engine room, where he'd been holding out so far and joined the fight. Alejandro, Heinrich and the crew holding up in the foreward of the ship, also joined the chaos in the morning after hearing the fighting going on.

By noon ten of Logan's eleven were either dead or wounded. And Lucas Bleecher the last one standing unharmed surrendered.

Outcome

Rose and the people who supported her captaincy managed to beat Logan and his mutineers after three days in a fight. Leaving in total eleven crew members injured and twelve of them dead.

The five surviving mutineers, four of them wounded were abandoned on the nearest island deep in the ocean the next day, left behind to take care of themselves.

Aftermath

After the piece of rock where they dropped off the mutineers disappeared behind the horizon, Rose stopped the Sunset Dawn and let her drift dead in the water, and asked the entire crew to gather on deck. Here she asked everybody to speak up who wanted to do so. A few of the crew still shared feelings towards Logan's complaints but they all agreed that he handled it wrong.

After a lengthy discussion about their ongoing diamond transport and the lack of any action. Rose asked the crew to vote on her position as a Captain. As it was Rose’s position, she herself abstained from voting. From the thirty-three available votes, thirty were in favour of keeping Rose as the captain. So Rose stayed on the sails where raised and the Sunset Dawn set course to the Panama Canal.

Conclusion

The Pirate crew lost sixteen members, and have to take care of seven wounded people of which four seriously. (After leaving the surviving mutineers to take care of themselves)

  • Heinrich the Master at arms lost his lower right leg to gangrene.
  • Jan de Jongh is blind on his left eye from a ricocheting bullet.
  • Michael got shot in his shoulder and can't pull the lines without pain.
  • David Barlow caught a bullet with his hand and is now missing a few fingers.

Organized and cohesive content. Well done. Those surviving mutineers got what they deserved. Do we ever find out what became of them?

How dare! A mutiny!   And poor Alejandro ... that knife will be missed :(   This is a great article, I really love how you've written it and explained the different sequences of the battle :D

Yes, they need to source a new knife from an unexpecting passerby now. Thanks! I got into a nice mood while writing it so happy to hear it worked out.

Thank you for reading my article :). I really enjoyed Summer Camp and am already looking forward to the next challenge. Unfortunately, I don't think I can make it to the awards ceremony :( I've to go sailing soon again, and the connection is most likely not good enough for twitch.
