The Fall of the Fens Myth in Realm Gate | World Anvil

The Fall of the Fens

"In the jungles of the Hinterlands lays the ruins of a magnificent city. The locals have come to calling it the Fens. We do not know the reasoning for the naming but we don't question the local customs. The ruins are rumored to be holding enough treasure that a man wouldn't have to work another day in his life. So we went with a skip in our step and a gleam in our eye. Little did we know that those magnificent ruins held a deadly enemy."   ~ Unknown

Summary

The Fens is a massive complex with a center of the ruins being dominated by a massive castle. The surrounding buildings are mere shells of themselves but the center castle is pristine with the exclusion of vines, moss, and other plant life trying to reclaim the it. Many rumors surround what the Fens use to be. Some say it was a kingdom of elves that fell into greed and debauchery. Others speculate it was a kingdom of an ancient race that became extinct after their fall from power either to their hubris or their God/Goddess no longer favored them allowing them to fall from grace.

Historical Basis

The myth is attached to a ruined city in the middle of the Slither Wood part of the Verdant Jungle. The name is lost and any signs or items that would have held a name have never yielded the information of what the city was in the past. The only scraps of information collected from the ruins give hints that the city use to be the center of a thriving kingdom during the Age of War. Then there speaks of a Viscount that caused turmoil in the city and started the down fall of this glorious kingdom.
