Lobotomy

"With the precise insertion of a metallic spike above the patients eye can result in a change of the patients mental state. The procedure can be facilitated with the use of anesthetics, or not. Neither will affect the outcome of the procedure, but if you're really concerned about patient pain than I recommend anesthetics."   ~Calth Frankenstein

Utility

The lobotomy is utilized for patients who have mental and emotional diseases that have no other obvious causes.
Access & Availability
The procedure of the lobotomy is widely available, but most doctors don't perform the procedure due to the high chance of failure. The most common practitioners of the lobotomy are rural doctors without higher medical training. Even the inventor, Calth Frankenstein, doesn't perform the procedure anymore unless it's a last resort for a patients condition.
Complexity
The supplies are simple, but the procedure is difficult. The individual performing the lobotomy must utilize a long spike of metal (e.g. ice pick) and a small mallet. The metallic spike must be positioned over the patients eye in a way so that it's won't be damaged during the procedure. The spike then must be tapped into the patients head with enough force to pierce the skull, and cause enough damage to the prefrontal cortex to be effective; but not hard enough to hit other parts of the brain causing other issues.
Discovery
The discovery of the lobotomy was a fluke when Calth Frankenstein was conducting a class in the Und University of Medicine and Research, and a student didn't perform the procedure correctly. At first furious Calth was about to chastise the student, but noticed a more docile demeanor in the patients subject. Calth took the students subject and performed a explorative carniotomy. The prefrontal cortex was damaged causing parts of the neuropathways to be severed.
